The Savar Brothers are rocking the local Art Scene!!!

Ahhh to be young and full of energy!!! Even though tonight is Preview Thursday in the Arts District Downtown, Evan and Hal Savar are having a little, well maybe not that little party of their own at the Artisan Hotel Boutique beginning at 6pm. Building off of their highly successful 1CrazyHappyHour party's, tonights event will be the launch party of their new website Fanbooked, where artists can showcase their talent and engage new audiences in the community and beyond. With such an amazing pool of talented artists and creatives in one place, this party should not be missed.

Oh my goodness, I easily suspect this will be a late night for me as I am transported from one artsy party to another, and not to mention the fact that tomorrow is First Friday!

Tonights event at the Artisan is free but you do have to be 21 to attend. So get away from the TV and come and party!

Brett Wesley Gallery will Soar this First Friday!

Artist Luis Varela-Rico w/
his latest creation
Liberace used to say "too much of a good thing is wonderful," and I couldn't agree more. When you have an amazing artist like Luis Varela-Rico showing off his work you know you are in for a wonderful treat. You may have seen his gorilla style sculptures throughout Downtown. Whether its on a building, light pole or even some random sign, his metal origami represents a new breed of artistic expression seldom seen in our neon covered jungle. I will admit I have been a huge fan of his work since my friends Michael and Hillary introduced me to it in late 2010. There they were, two birds, just hanging on a side of a building silently moving in the breeze, I was in enamored...

This past weekend I had the pleasure of getting a sneak peek of Luis latest flock at his home and work space. How I survived not being cut by a piece of steel or blinded by a plasma torch is beyond me, but at least I am hear to tell the tail. Anyway enough of my bad humor. In addition to Luis work there will be an exhibition of emerging photographer Nathan Douglas. These two artists are definitely not to be missed!

Luis and Nathan's work will be on exhibition beginning on Preview Thursday, May 31st at Brett Wesley Gallery in the heart of Las Vegas' Arts District.

The LGBT Center of Southern Nevada gets a new home in Downtown!!!

If all goes well in the next few months the The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada will begin construction on their new and expanded location in the heart of Downtown. Relocating from their current location at the Commercial Center, The Center will more than double in size and create a place that will add a new and dynamic synergy to the important programs and services that they provide for the LGBT community. With a cafe', large and convertible meeting space, library and garden, the Robert L. Forbuss Building located at 401 South Maryland Parkway, will be a much needed boost of positive energy to an area of Downtown that has seen better days.

I cannot say enough about how happy I am to see this important organization relocating to Downtown and only a few blocks from my place!

For more information about The Center please follow this link - http://www.thecenterlv.com/

WELCOME HOME!!!

Okay so it needs a little work. But you can see the potential!

Vegas PBS Producer and Friend leaving Las Vegas...

As a local I am pretty used to people leaving Las Vegas. It is a transient town after all and people come and go rather quickly. Sadly I have become pretty numb to the fact actually. But on occasion there are those individuals who depart that truly leave me with a huge sense of loss. That moment came to me a month ago when my good friend Desiree Duncan, who I consider my sister, informed me that she was leaving Las Vegas. There were no words to describe the shock I found myself in. I guess this is the closest it will ever feel for me to have a child move away to go to college.

Desiree is the type of person that has an electrifying personality. She is fun to hang out with and professionally she is a leader like no other. As a television producer, correspondent, editor and on-air talent for Vegas PBS she created important programming that helped raise the level of community in a city not known for such things. As a volunteer for important causes, especially for the LGBT community, she helped raise awareness, fund-raise and create important events such as the annual Artrageous Vegas at the Cosmopolitan. What is most amazing about these accomplishments is that Desiree has done them all before the age of 30! An inspiration to say the least.

Though Desiree is leaving our radiant city to continue her career in public television she has undoubtedly left her mark. She is leaving a long lasting impact that will be felt for years to come, not to mention the countless friendships she has fostered with so many that will not easily fade. She will be sorely missed but never ever forgotten. Goodness knows I will be keeping in touch with my little sister and visiting her as often as I can. Who knows, maybe soon I will finally get to play that game of horseshoes with her in Tennessee...

This evening Desiree "Des" Duncan will be honored by the Equal Rights Campaign at their annual gala dinner at the Wynn Las Vegas. An award well deserved for one of the most dynamic women to ever grace our great city.

G-dspeed Desiree!

The Amanda Harris Gallery of Contemporary Art opens at Soho Lofts!

As I reported back in November http://lvartsandculture.blogspot.com/2011/11/new-contemporary-art-gallery-opens-in.html a new and exciting gallery will re-open at Soho Lofts. The Amanda Harris Gallery of Contemporary Art officially opens this Saturday with an inaugural exhibition by artist Wess Dahl-Berg.

After spending several weeks out in the deserts of the American Southwest, Wess has been diligently preparing his collection for the grand unveiling. After receiving several text messages from the artist over the past few weeks I am getting really excited to see this new body of work. Also there is a special Q & A performance happening at the gallery that evening so attendance is a must for all! I know I have to be there... wink wink... : )

The exhibition Painting to the End of the Night opening reception will start at 7pm and continue to 10pm. After the reception you can walk two steps over to the Lady Silvia and continue the party!

Local artist S.C. Jones inspired by an angel...

As I strolled through the First Friday festivities this past week I took a small pit stop at Roz Knight's City of the World gallery. Walking up to the gallery I was greeted by local Las Vegas artist Sean Jones who just inaugurated a collection of paintings of one of Las Vegas' most beloved historic motels, the Blue Angel. These amazing paintings reminded me of when I was a child gazing up at the Blue Angel as she looked down on me. As a little boy it was an amazing sight to behold and for Sean it had a similar affect.

Located on the corner of Casino Center and Colorado the City of the World gallery is chock-full of art and interesting little spaces to explore. Every square inch of this converted 1940's bungalow is bursting at the seams with art. The gallery is a must see when venturing into the arts district. So go and take a look and tell them Paco sent you!

Reception will take place on Friday, May 18

Sean Jones Artist Statement

Growing up in Las Vegas in the early 70’s, I often found myself staring out the back window of my parents’ or grandparents’ vehicles as we headed to Charleston Boulevard. I don’t believe any of those vehicles had seatbelts. I would tuck my legs under me and directly face the window for premium viewing. In those days, Vegas was vast blocks of dirt and tumbleweed, occasionally marred by signs of progress.

Charleston Boulevard was the only center of commerce and civilization in my dust town. We went to Charleston to shop at the mall, pay bills, see movies at the Huntridge or Fox or Redrock 11. We would visit neighbors or family working in the casinos on nearby Fremont Street. We usually entered the mecca of Charleston via Eastern Avenue. On the corner of these streets, rotating impossibly high in the air of the northwest corner, I would catch my first glance of the Blue Angel. Vibrant, blonde hair. Beautiful face. Long, blue gown. She would finally turn my way, seeming to look right at me, pointing a magical wand as if in blessing. It never dawned on me that such a glorious vision would be attached to something as mundane as a motel. You see, the front of the motel is actually on Fremont Street – I only saw her magically floating over various, low buildings (Vegas had building height restrictions back then).

As I grew up, eventually driving my own car past her a thousand times, I would crane my neck slightly out the window to get a quick look at her. The Blue Angel. Eventually she stopped rotating. All the movie theatres on Charleston were closed, chased away by neighborhood casino multi-plexes. The mall was torn down and replaced by a standard strip mall. The area became one that you drove through quickly, never thinking of stopping. I heard they were closing the Blue Angel Motel, so I drove out and took as many pictures as I could, knowing that the Angel herself is destined to be in the Neon Graveyard soon. As I clicked my last picture, a bird shot out from beneath the Angel and flew over my head.
SC Jones stands with his latest
collection

As I began painting the images, I wanted to really capture the cloudless, infinitely blue Las Vegas sky. It sometimes seems so empty and deep that you could fall into it. Seeing the reality of the Angel up close in my photographs, I chose to show the Angel that I saw in my childhood heart. Ironically, it wasn’t until I began painting her that I realized she is actually the Blue Fairy from Walt Disney’s Pinocchio. A big clue is that most angels don’t carry wands.

Public art defaced by local business? Say it ain't so!

As I was on my weekly sojourn to dine at my parents this past Sunday I noticed that several of the county's "ZAP" public art projects along Tropicana had been defaced. Taggers had done their bad deed on several of the works-of-art along the busy stretch of road. But what was most outrageous was the fact that several businesses placed their advertising on the art! Not just is defacing public art illegal, but to place your ads on public property, in this case signal boxes, is a most egregious offense.

Luckily the best thing to come of all this is the fact that these businesses left their telephone numbers for everyone to see!

UPDATE -
Apparently after several phone calls, Yelp and Facebook posts one of the business owners has gone to the site to see if they can remove the stickers. Hopefully none of the artwork beneath will be damaged. Stay tuned...

Spektral Quartet in concert
May 19, 2012
$10 in advance, $12 on concert day
Winchester Cultural Center
Event Description:

Chicago’s classical “supergroup,” the Spektral Quartet, performs at Winchester Cultural Center at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 19. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 on concert day. They may be purchased in advance at Winchester or on line at www.clarkcountynv.gov.
Aurelien Fort-Pederzoli and J. Austin Wulliman, violins; Doyle Armbrust, viola; and Russell Rolen, cello; make up the Spektral Quartet, which comfortably mixes Haydn and Beethoven with Philip Glass, George Crumb and newer composers. The quartet is also known for entertaining and experimental approaches to stagecraft.

TimeOut Chicago celebrated the group’s first season, which ended in June 2011 by pointing out that Fort-Pederzoli, who played a recital at Winchester last year, is one of the founders of Chicago’s highly respected classical ensemble Anaphora; that Wulliman is a member of ensemble dal niente; that Rolen is a Northwestern University chamber music coach; and praised the quartet’s “outstanding mix of Mozart and Philip Glass.”

Chicago Classical Review saluted Spektral’s, “winning combination of superb playing and a fresh approach to repertoire choice and concert staging.”
For the Winchester Cultural Center concert, Spektral will perform Josef Haydn’s Quartet in F major, Op. 77 No. 2; "Dig Absolutely" by young Chicago composer Christopher Fisher-Lochhead; and Maurice Ravel’s Quartet in F major.
