The Atomic Testing Museum Honors 5 Year Anniversary with World Trade Center Artifact Dedication...

During the 1950's and well into the early part of the 1990's Las Vegas was the epicenter of America's fascination with the atomic bomb. Located 60 miles north of Las Vegas the Nevada Test Site was the locus of scientific studies that helped propel the United States into becoming a world super power. Photographers from around the world and the Las Vegas News Bureau would go to the test site to witness the awesome power of the most destructive force in nature; the harnessing of the atom. For many years above ground testing was deemed safe but out of fear for contamination testing went underground and eventually treaties were signed that ceased testing all together.

Many years later a team of former test site workers seeing the need to educate the public about this important piece of history banded together and started the Nevada Test Site Historical Foundation. Eventually the foundation began the arduous task of creating an institution to honor the science behind "the bomb" and those who gave their lives to protect our great nation. In 2005 as the city of Las Vegas celebrated its centennial the Atomic Testing Museum was born.

If you have never been to the Atomic Testing Museum it is a must see historic attraction in Las Vegas. I proudly served as a trustee for the museum and can tell you personally this place is one of Las Vegas best kept secrets. If you like science at its best the Atomic Testing Museum is for you.

In honoring its 5th Anniversary the museum will be remembering those who lost their lives during 911 with a dedication of artifacts from the World Trade Center on this Saturday at 1PM. For more information about the museum and this special event please visit their website http://www.atomictestingmuseum.org/

Downtown Denizens Descend!

It was in early 2007, shortly after I left my two year stint as Interim Curator of the Neon Museum that my fabulous colleagues in the Office of Cultural Affairs invited me to a congratulatory send off to my new position as Curator of the News Bureau. They invited me to the brand new Downtown Cocktail Room for some cheer. I will never forget walking up to the entrance and trying to figure out how to get in, then all of a sudden this wall opened up revealing my good friend Elizabeth who greeted me with a giant smile, a hug and a welcome. That evening solidified my absolute love for what has become one of Downtown's must see and experience attractions.

The DCR, as it is affectionately called by the denizens who partake in its magic is one of Las Vegas' greatest lounges. It is decorated in warm shades of crimson and dark chocolate with artistry by some of Las Vegas' great mainstays of the scene, such as Steven Spann and Michael Wardle. The sounds of soulful and deep house permeate the environment which sets the stage for the performance that takes place at the bar. With George, Alicia and the rest of the cast on that stage you know the cocktails you are about to imbibe will be something special. I honestly have to say that I have never had a less favorable cocktail at the DCR and the reason is simple; the DCR is about pure experience and that is thanks to the attention to detail that is taken when each work of art is served.

Today marks the Third Anniversary of the DCR and proprietor Michael Cornthwaite and his fiancee, the lovely Jennifer Harrington, have something very special planned. If you want to experience real Las Vegas Culture and live like a Downtowner, even for one evening, then you must come to the Downtown Cocktail Room.

Hummm I think I will start my evening with a Downtown Dill or an Absinthe perhaps? Decisions Decisions...

Chicanery in the Governors Mansion... and a time to lead...

Last year Nevada celebrated the 100th anniversary of its governors mansion. The elegant neoclassical structure designed by Reno Architect George A. Ferris in 1908 has been the residence of some of the best and well "less desirable" governors this state has had. I visited the governors mansion last year and mused at the beauty of the structure and its surroundings. The quaint hamlet of Carson City in which the mansion is located is not just the state capital but it is also believed to be home of the smallest state capital building in the United States. It is said Nevada has the smallest capital building because of our distrust of big government.

Whether you believe in historical legends or not the reality is that our state government is so small that our rapid population increase over the past 25 years has rendered it almost ineffective. We are well aware and have been for sometime that the power of the state has been shifting from its stronghold in Northern Nevada to Southern Nevada, yet as this shift has occurred our state government has remained basically the same. Every two years the legislature meets to hammer out a budget and fix a few patches here and there but when it comes to looking at the bigger picture such as planning for the future they have come up short. This is most evident over the last few years with the economy sinking into a morass. In addition it does not help that Nevada has had the "least desirable" governor in its history taking up residence in the Ferris Mansion.

A few months ago when I re-launched this blog I vowed to keep politics out of the picture. But in lieu of the draconian cuts that the Governor has proposed and the task that the state legislature must now confront I myself cannot keep quite nor should I. Nevada is my home state and as a native I have, like every other citizen, the right to stand up and speak out. The proposed cuts to our educational system is most worrisome and should give each and every one of us pause. Our state, already at the bottom of many lists when it comes to educational funding, stands at the edge of the abyss with little hope to recover if these cuts go through. Our schools are grossly overpopulated, our children are embarrassingly under-served yet with this well known fact our "less desirable" Governor is willing to sacrifice the little progress we have made over the past two decades just to satisfy his political ambitions.

It does not take a theoretical physicist to understand that without a good and well funded educational and arts infrastructure we cannot attract the kind of creative businesses that will assist this state in the diversification of its economy. Nevada must diversify its economy if we are going to mitigate the continued boom and bust cycle that has been part of our history since before our statehood; just look at the countless ghost towns dotting the landscape. In addition it is not fair to cannibalize one industry to take on the burden of practically funding the entire state budget. All businesses should pay their fair share but at the same time we must look at other industries that will assist us in improving our states revenues. Now I do not want to get into the nuances nor the details of all the problems that exist with our states arcane tax structure, what I prefer to do is take a look the important aspect of quality of life.

As I mentioned in a previous post, investments in universities, colleges, schools, museums, cultural centers, theater, public art and all the things that enrich the citizenry encourage economic diversification in a community. Creative businesses such as knowledge based companies, innovators, information technology and scores of others will not come to Nevada if we cannot demonstrate that we have the infrastructure that creative businesses demand for their workforce. Yes Nevada has a favorable tax environment for businesses to relocate here but have you noticed that they are not exactly flocking to the state nor Las Vegas for that matter? The reason is simple, we have a grossly underfunded educational system and the investment in our cultural infrastructure is minimal.

Today our state legislators will have to take on a great burden and attempt to repair a budgetary hole that seems to get larger everyday. They will be poised, as they did last year to take the helm and make the leadership decisions needed to sustain the state through these difficult times. It is important that we as citizens engage the state legislators and tell them how we feel about the future of our state. We must also remind them to set aside politics or whatever future political ambitions they may have to make the right decisions that will help save those things that are important to the diversification of our economy and our quality of life.

It is my hope that over the next few days the legislature will demonstrate leadership and carefully craft a solution that will maintain the integrity of our already fragile educational system. In addition it is also our responsibility as the citizens of Nevada to work with our leaders at the local and state level to come up with pragmatic and non-polarizing solutions that will help us prosper again; remember our children are depending on us.

Gay Latino youth coming of age poetically...

Last night I had the pleasure to attend the first performance of the Maricolectiva at the East Las Vegas Cultural Center. The artistic collective is made up of three gay Latino poets - Emmanuelle J. Leal-Santillan, Yosimar Reyes and a fixture of the Las Vegas Gay Latino movement Xuanito Espinoza-Cuellar. In addition there were drag performances by Candy, Brissa and Zaragoza Goy Rabago Villarreal.

The performances and dialogs of poetry reflected contemporary themes affecting gay Latino youth in the United States. Though being able to speak both Spanish and English would have been highly recommended for those in the audience, the show was a smattering of poetry readings, dialogs and drag performances. Each of the performers felt extremely comfortable on stage with their dialogue, which were comedic at times while bringing up important subject matters that affect many in the LGBT and Latino Communities.

Each of the performers had their unique strengths but one stood out and that was the dialog of Xuanito Espinoza-Cuellar. I will tell you this, Xuanitos command of the Spanish and English languages was stunning. His performances were stellar and one that left me hungry for much more. Besides being an activist on issues affecting the LGBT community he is a fervent supporter of immigrant rights that take him beyond one issue but multiple complex issues that directly affect his life and his poetry. The tone of his dialogues, filled with Spanish nuances and double entendre was amazing. In addition, the fact that this was coming from someone of such a young age only demonstrates to me that he is poised to take on the world by storm, whether it is a life as a comedian or political activist or both perhaps; the latter more than likely.

Being Gay and Latino is never easy and these young performers demand the public's complacency with their sexuality. The "Macho" culture that exists in Latin America makes it extremely difficult to be gay but the cracks in this archaic social structure are beginning to show thanks to the young who are willing to look progressively into the future. Goodness knows change is the only constant and these performers know it well and use it to their advantage. I am definitely looking forward to seeing more performances by the Maricolectiva.

Bravo!

A Pleasant Surprise!

Just a day after I opined on Facebook about our local newspapers lack of coverage of the Cultural Arts...

... a few weeks ago a new weekly launched called SEVEN. I finally sat down and had a date with SEVEN and I will tell you I was pleasantly surprised by what I read inside. I even woke up this morning cuddling it!

I will admit that I do not have a television. Yes you heard me correctly I do not have a TV, I have not had one in 5 years and trust me I never looked back. I get all of my information from reading books or newspapers online. I read or monitor approximately 12 newspapers a day. Those include most major papers from around the State of Nevada and several national papers. I am a Cultural Arts news junky.

Here is a list of papers I read or monitor daily and weekly from around the state:

Las Vegas Sun, Reno Gazette Journal, Las Vegas City Life, Las Vegas Weekly, Elko Daily Free Press, Ely Times, Lahontan Valley Times, Pahrump Valley Times, Nevada Appeal, Virginia City News and now SEVEN.

From around the nation:

New York Times, L.A. Times, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, etc..

Obviously this list does not include the scores of magazines and websites such as KNPR.org that I read. In addition I also monitor a brand new application for your I-Phone or Android that was created by my Facebook friend Jorge Lara editor of VIMMAG http://www.vimmag.com/. The VIMMAG free application for your phone is a great way to keep abreast of the Cultural Arts on the go. As a matter of fact you can even monitor this very blog on this new app.

With all these great ways to find out what is happening Culturally in Las Vegas you have no excuse for not getting enculturated!

La Boheme did not disappoint...

It is the third time that I have seen Puccini's opera La Boheme and for a third time the death of Mimi brought me to tears. Yes I will admit without any remorse that I do cry at the opera. As a general rule nineteenth-century Italian operas tend to end sadly and La Boheme is no exception. La Boheme was performed this past Sunday by the Nevada Opera Theater at the Artemis Ham Concert Hall.

The opera is set in Paris during the 1830's and centers around the life of four Bohemians; a poet, an artist, a musician and a philosopher all living together, poorly of course, in a garret (top floor of a house). The story centers around two lovers, the poet Rodolfo and a seamstress named Mimi. Mimi who is sadly being taken over by consumption is played by the Grammy Award nominated soprano Demetra George and Rodolfo is played by Gabriel Reoyo-Pazos.

The performance of Demetra George was an absolute joy for she could not have played a better and more frail Mimi. It was as if Giacomo himself cast Demetra for the role; it was perfect. The performances by Gabriel Reoyo-Pazos, Kelly Anderson as Marcello the artist, Eric Castro as Schaunard the musician and Morton Hyson as Colline the philosopher did not disappoint either. They played each of their roles with vigor and most importantly you could tell they were having fun on stage. When the performers have fun you know you are in for a great show. The young and talented Michael Elliot played two rolls, first as the venerable landlord Benoit, who after a few glasses of wine forgot to collect the rent from the four Bohemians and Alcindoro the wealthy patron of the eccentric Musetta. Musetta was brilliantly played by Suzanne Vinnik whose powerful voice at times could shatter a crystal glass. With Maestro Frank Fetta at the helm La Boheme shattered my expectations and made me yearn for more. I literally left Ham Hall ready to subject my emotions to another opera but I am willing to wait patiently until June 13 when the Nevada Opera Theater will be performing Puccini's Madama Butterfly.

Bravo!

An afternoon with Puccini...

Think Paris around Christmas in the mid-nineteenth century. Your poor, your cold, all you have are a few friends and maybe a little love. An appropriate though sad opera by one of the worlds greatest composers. This afternoon the Nevada Opera Theater will be performing Giacomo Puccini's "La Boheme" at the Artemis Ham Concert Hall. The performance begins at 2pm with a pre-performance lecture by Maestro Frank Fetta. The performance will be starring internationally acclaimed soprano and two-time Grammy nominee Demetra George with appearances by Gabriel Reoyo-Pazos, Suzanne Vinnik, Kelly Anderson, Eric Castro, Michael Elliot and Morton Hyson.

The Artemis Ham Concert Hall is located on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas 4505 S. Maryland Parkway. For tickets and information please call (702) 895-ARTS (2787). http://pac.unlv.edu/

Happy New Year! 新年快樂

Today marks the beginning of the Chinese New Year and Las Vegas has rolled out the red banners across the city to welcome our friends from across the Pacific. There are celebrations planned at most of the major resorts and of course in Las Vegas' "China Town" neighborhood along Spring Mountain. Interestingly enough this years celebrations just happen to fall on Valentines Day.

With the coming of the Year of the Tiger wonderful and great things are are expected for 2010. According to ancient traditions the tiger is an admired animal known for his courage and ability to fight. The tiger also protects against what is known as the three ancient tragedies of fire, ghosts and thievery. The tiger is a fiercely independent animal and stands for what is right.

Celebrations along the Strip will take place at many resorts with spectacular decorations such as the Bellagio's Conservatory and traditional Shaolin dances throughout. If you decide to make the Chinese New Year festivities part of your day make sure to wear red the color of "Good Luck."

Smith Center for the Performing Arts rises at Symphony Park...

As a Downtowner I have been watching from my living room window the Smith Center for the Performing Arts rise from what was once the site of Las Vegas' first major industry. The railroad yards that were first inhabited by the Salt Lake, San Pedro and Los Angeles Railroad and then later by the Union Pacific are now the newly reclaimed site of Las Vegas' most exciting project, Symphony Park. Key to that project is of course the performing arts center. This evening representative of the Smith Center will be giving a lecture about Las Vegas' Dream project.

The presented are as follows:
Mr. Donald D. Snyder, Chairman of the Smith Center
Mr. Myron Martin, President & CEO;
Mr. Paul Beard, Vice President & COO
Mr. Rick Johnson, Vice President & CFO

Please join me tonight for this important lecture about the exciting Smith Center for the Performing Arts. The lecture is FREE and open to the public and will take place at the Historic 5th Street School located at 401 S. Fourth Street. Doors open at 5pm the program begins promptly at 5:30. For more information please call 702-229-6469

Another delightful concert...

While a large percentage of the local population decided to sit down in front of the flat screen to watch an annual American tradition I decided to attend a less tense engagement at the Clark County Library. The Nevada Chamber Symphony did it again with a delightful concert in celebration of children. The annual children's concert did not disappoint for it was rich in pop tunes and children performances including a magic show by the Desert Magician himself Jason Andrews.

The concert began with a wonderful arrangement of well known classics such as the Entrance of the Gladiators by Julius Fucik, a protege' of Dvorak, which seemed a fitting beginning to the concert considering what was going on in Miami at that same moment. With narration by the Chamber Symphonies Chairwoman Margaret Trasatti as Master of Ceremonies, including guest narration by children from Ronzone Elementary School; the concert continued with well known pieces such as the theme song to the Pink Panther by Henry Mancini, Over the Rainbow by Harold Arlen and of course my personal favorite a medley of the theme to Superman which was originally composed by John Williams.

After a brief intermission which included a beautiful collection of romantic songs performed by the Nevada Chamber Symphony Jazz Trio the concert continued. The second half included the the classic by Gioacchino Rossini William Tell, Vienna Forever by Johann Schrammel and to the delight of the audience the Mexican Hat Dance which included a performance by the Ronzone Kindergarten Dance Ensemble. I do have to say these young tykes did a marvelous job doing this traditional dance.

The concert ended with a more American flair with a series of songs that you would normally hear during Independence Day but nonetheless fun to hear in winter. The last five songs included This Land is Your Land by Woody Guthrie, Star Spangled Spectacular by George Cohan, National Emblem by Edwin Bagley, Start and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa and for a bit of a European flair the last song was the Can-Can by Jacques Offenbach. In the end the concert was a fabulous break from the cool weekend though I can honestly say I was a little disappointed that Maestro Rodolfo Gonzales did not at least include When the Saints Go Marching In.

If you did not get an opportunity to see the concert the next show is March 7 at 3pm at the Clark County Library Theater on East Flamingo. All the concerts are FREE. For more information on the Nevada Chamber Symphony please call 702-433-9280.

You Say Stardust I say Estardas...

Over the last few days I have been pleasantly surprised by the works of art that I have had the pleasure to muse with in 18b, especially works that were inspired by Las Vegas. Kristine McCallister's important works at Brett Wesley Gallery comes to mind with renditions of the Neon Museums Boneyard set against the stark contrasts of the venerable storage facility on North Las Vegas Boulevard. In addition Bobby Logic's "Frontier" at Laura Henkel Fine Art featuring the long gone "Frontier" and "Stardust" signs with a construction crane in the background hearkening back to the days of Las Vegas' excesses.

But of all the Las Vegas inspired works that I have seen this week there is one piece that absolutely blew me away and took me back to a time when I was a child growing up in Las Vegas; Justin Favela's Latinized version of the historic "Stardust" sign "Estardas." Anyone who grew up in Las Vegas over the last several decades who happen to be of Latin descent remembers the way we pronounced the word "Stardust" in Spanish. Recalling my parents way of pronouncing the word not to mention the multitude of family and friends who came to the city and simply said "el Estardas". It is very obvious that Favela's work is both inspired by his experiences growing up in the Radiant City and his time working as a tour guide at the Neon Museum.

"Estardas" is also a very important work of art in the evolution of Las Vegas' art scene because it bridges the gap between the artistic and Latino communities. For years there has been a disconnect between these two important communities especially in the acknowledgment of contributions Latins have given to the arts in Las Vegas. But aside of these cultural disconnects small steps are being taken to correct it and those steps are being taken by talented artists like Justin Favela. Favela is without a doubt an artist that this community should keep an eye on.

"Estardas" which is made completely of cardboard and is approximately 8' wide and 4' tall, is one of the centerpieces of the Contemporary Arts Center's show "Tomorrow People." A beautifully curated collection of works by young artists who have been inspired by Las Vegas arts scene and their studies at UNLV. The other featured artists in the exhibition are Leah Craig, Catherine Cruise and Thomas Willis.

I would encourage you to see "Estardas" and other works at the Contemporary Arts Center located in the historic Arts Factory in 18b Las Vegas' Arts District. For more information please visit their website at http://www.lasvegascac.org/

Cirque du Soleil--in February once again supports First Friday Las Vegas. Ever since it has had the resources to follow its dreams and to present shows around the world, Cirque du Soleil has chosen to be involved in the community. Every year, an amount equivalent to 1% of Cirque du Soleil gross earnings is committed by the company and its founder for various cultural programs supporting emerging artists, social action and responsibility programs including Cirque du Monde, Cirque du Soleil’s social circus intervention program geared to underprivileged youth, as well as the ONE DROP Foundation.
