Size Matters @ Sin City Gallery...

She has done it again... Just when you thought Dr. Laura Henkel could not get any edgier she goes and curates the ultimate erotic show. When she shared the title of the show with me last year I could not have blushed any BIGGER. Not that I am a size queen when it comes to big art, but even I have limits. Well kinda...

I have to give it Dr. Laura, not literally of course, that she can put a show together and do it right. With her little gallery that could, she has brought to Downtown the kind of artwork that is expected in the City of Sin. Whether it is a phallus, a vagina or a contemporary rose by any other name, she has it and gives it good. With an amazing line-up of artists this international juried exhibition has something for everyone.

As is stated on the website -
12” of Sin: ‘So Much Art You Can Barely Fit It All In’ is an annual art show exhibiting the finest art by juror-selected artists from around the world. Hosted by Las Vegas’ Sin City Gallery, the exhibition explores the variety of subjects and themes with elegance and modern innovation, through a variety of work no larger than 12” square. This unique exhibition provides art patrons with the opportunity to secure the finest works of art from prestigious and emerging artists who embody both the cutting edge of today’s contemporary art world and the vast breadth of artistic expression.

I could not have said it any better myself, but I can go on an add that this is definitely an exhibition that should not be missed. Thanks to Dr. Laura First Friday in February is gonna be hot hot hot! Oh and there is an after party too!

Proceeds from the show will benefit the Sin Sity Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. A non-profit organization that assists individuals who are living with HIV/ AIDS.

The Primrose Path... At Brett Wesley Gallery...

There is only one word to describe the next show at BWG... SAAAWEEET!!! I make absolutely no apologies when I say I love all art urban. Whether it is produced by your local aerosol artist in a storm drain or by any artist who is influenced by the urban landscape; the art is raw, the art has soul and in many instances the art is wrong in such a good way. In the case of Luke and Juan, they take what is simply the cute, lovable and cuddly and drop it smack in the middle of brawl. You definitely wont find these "teddy bears" in your mamma's toy store.

I was first introduced to Juan Muniz at Place Gallery a couple of years ago and immediately got excited about by his work. At first it reminded me of the cute little character of Norwegian electronic music troupe Royksopp's video Poor Leno, but as you look deeper this cute little guy seems to place himself in what could become an unfortunate situation. With Luke Chueh on the other hand he takes it a step further and allows his little characters to go all the way so-to-speak... But I don't want to give too much away and allow you folks to come down and see the show for yourself.

The Primrose Path opens on Preview Thursday, February 2nd and on First Friday, February 3rd...

You don't need to be an art snob to enjoy art so come Downtown and remember "artists make great pets."

Power couple destined to leave a mark on the arts...

Call it destiny if you will; a couple with artistic proclivities comes to Las Vegas to begin a new life. One, a lady who has an amazing penchant for what the French call En-PleinAir art. The second, a gentleman with an ability to channel a bit of Howlin' Wolf. Together these two make a powerful combination of artistic energy that anyone would easily envy. This amazing couple is none other than Kathleen and Rudy Strukoff.

I met Rudy in 2011 at the Beat Coffeehouse strumming a guitar. Rudy is an imposing figure, tall and someone you would want on your side in saloon brawl. Kathleen on the other hand is petite with fiery hair and a smile as bright as a Las Vegas day. But don't let my descriptions fool you. Rudy might look imposing but he is a jolly fellow ready to demonstrate his and Kathleen's talents to the world.

Shortly after they moved their studio to the Arts Factory I remember how excited they were to have a new place to create art. Even though they did not have any art on the walls and it was still a bit of a construction zone they showed me it's potential. You could easily imagine Kathleen standing at an easel or Rudy sitting on a stool with a guitar.

Just hanging out with them is addictive; they love people and enjoy good conversation. You know you are in for a treat when you start talking to them. Especially about their life experiences, their art and where they came from. In Kathleen's case she grew up in New Mexico, a place where Georgia O'Keeffe made famous with her colorful paintings of flowers and adobe's that are today a staple of the American Southwest. Goodness knows that state can have a profound effect on anyone visiting it, if even for a brief moment. One can only imagine a child growing up in the Land of Enchantment. It is obvious from Kathleen's art that this land would change her perception of the world around her.

Being a PleinAir artist allows Kathleen to be in the environment in which she paints. Becoming one with her surroundings to truly capture its essence. Studying her work you are immediately reminded of the late 19th century impressionist and post-impressionist movements. An era made famous by the likes of Monet, Pissarro, and Van Gogh to name a few of the more well known names.
Fremont Street Colors
By Kathleen Strukoff

During a recent conversation, Kathleen mentioned the need to find the right light when she composes. Sometimes starting exceptionally early in the morning just when the sun comes up so she can capture the perfect moment. Though aside of such artistic rigidity and dedication I find that Kathleen allows herself the freedom to experiment beyond such structures. In a painting she recently completed of "yours-truly" she demonstrates the use of a vibrant color palate. Using exaggerated colors to make the painting come alive, her command of bright colors are perfect for Las Vegas especially when you are attempting to create impressions of its neon encrusted landscapes.

Rudy like Kathleen is a product of his environment. Growing up in Chicago with its amazing music seen, it is no wonder that "RudeDog", as he is also called, would become an accomplished musician. Interestingly enough it was Kathleen that got him to start playing the guitar. On his 31st birthday she got him the perfect gift, an old guitar and a few lessons. After those initial 6 lessons he decided to parlay that experience into 4 years of serious study culminating with the creation of a band. Lucky to have worked with some amazing musicians such as Ambrose “Sonny” Rivera and Steven Katz, Rudy was ready to take on the world. Today Rudy continues to rock the strings, teaches lessons and even repairs guitars.

Being involved in the cultural arts as I am you meet lots of creatives. Some you meet once and never see again but there are others you come across that grab your attention and make you want to know them more. In the case of Rudy and Kathleen their love and true appreciation of the desert and vintage Vegas takes hold of you. More times than not you meet people who dislike Las Vegas, but when you meet people who can look beyond the pretty lights of the Strip and see this community for what it truly is, those are the people I want to know. I want to explore thier thoughts about this environment and what attracts them to it. Before moving to Las Vegas Kathleen did her due diligence, began digging deeper and was amazed that there was more happening artistically then what appears. Anyone who truly wants to know more about a city and what makes it tic will seek it. For artists and creatives this is a natural tendency. That is why it is easy to single out those who claim Las Vegas has no culture from those who know otherwise.

In the end Kathleen and Rudy want to be catalysts for change in the arts scene, they want to leave a mark in some way that helps the community grow and continue developing in a positive way. Though a lofty goal for two recent transplants, I suspect that they will not have a problem doing it. They truly care about their new home and have already made great strides to be a part of the mosaic that is the arts in Southern Nevada.

You can visit Rudy and Kathleen at their studio LaChica: Art and Music inside the world famous Arts Factory. Tell them Paco sent you...

F.A.M. Festival - Fashion, Art & Music TONIGHT!!!

Despite Las Vegas supposedly being a cultural wasteland there are always events happening that dispel that notion. Tonight on the far south side of town there is a nice festival that is bringing out lots of Las Vegas' talented artists, musicians and fashionistas. The event begins to tonight at 7pm. So make sure to go out and support this event and all the awesome artists who are making Las Vegas so very livable.

3 Baaad Sheep rockin the Downtown arts scene...

Eddie, Alex & Sky
3 Very Baaad Sheep...
Not since the 5 Finger Miscount many years ago has an art troupe taken Downtown by storm as have the boys at Three Baaad Sheep. Yep these zany artists with their zany style are creating quite a bit of buzz much to the chagrin of the hoity-toity artsy intelligentsia. So much so that in 2011 they caught the eye of jurors Kirsten Swenson and Kenton Aemmerson who awarded them Best of Show at the 2011 Artrageous art extravaganza at the Cosmopolitan.

So just when you thought power trio Alexander Huerta, Alexander "Skye" Carranza and Eddie "Cicifu" Canumay couldn't get any wilder they have teamed up with some of the most well known artists in Las Vegas to bring together another show to wow the masses. The mixed media collaborations include Marty Walsh, Kitschy Chic, Libby Lemonade, Miguel Rodriguez, Joel Spencer, Carlos de Las Heras, Brent Holmes and Mark Mellon. With such a line up of artists you know this show is a must see this upcoming First Friday. I got a sneak peek at the collection and it had me smiling all weekend long. Heck I even picked up my first Three Baaad Sheep to hang at the Skypad (my place).

The opening preview for 3 Baaad Sheep and 8 Baaad Ass Artist 2012 will take place at PeaceNArt Studio Thursday, February, 2nd and First Friday, February 3rd 6pm. The show runs through the month.

Ethiopian artist featured at Theater 7 Downtown...

Vanessa Juarez,
Curator
The great thing about Theater 7 is not just the fact that they are an independent theater that features amazing indy-films but it is also doubles up as an art gallery. The gallery features an eclectic variety of art, from contemporary to western themes, some good and others, well you get the idea. In either case its a great art house and one worth visiting when you are in the Downtown area. Besides its surrounded by great little galleries such as 222 Imperial, Photo Bang Bang, Cobalt Blue and Las Vegas' oldest gay bar, the one and only, Snicks Place.

This Friday Theater 7 will be opening Inner Voice an art exhibition by Ethiopian artist Eyob Mergia. Unfortunately I have not seen the show so I cannot quite opine but I can say this that Vanessa Juarez has curated this exhibition. I met Vanessa not too long after she arrived in Las Vegas and she exudes art and creativity. Not just is she the perfect person to be curating exhibitions in our fabulous city but she has a lot of cross over appeal between the Hispanic and non-Hispanic communities. The biggest problem that we have had in Las Vegas has been artists and creatives that can reach a wide audience across multiple cultures.  If there is anyone in Vegas that has that appeal its Vanessa. She is definitely someone I am going to keep an eye on and so should you.

Make sure to make it down to Theater 7 on Friday, January 20th for the opening reception of Inner Voice the art of Eyob Mergia. The reception begins at 6pm and it's FREE.

The way to appreciate theater...

I have learned to appreciate theater by getting to know someone who is in theater. Whether it is an actor, actress, a producer or a director, the lighting guy, maybe even a critic, meeting someone in the field always makes the experience so much richer. At least that has been the case with me. Why? Because you have a perception of who that person is out of costume and then when you see them transform into someone completely different on stage it is magical to witness. But if you don't know someone don't fret come Downtown anyway and I will personally introduce you to few thespians.

Now with that said, the kids over and Born and Raised Productions and Rag Tag Entertainment have teamed up to bring the latest show in the Arts District. The show aptly called ART by Yasmina Reza and directed by Joe Hynes, stars none other then local actors Geo Nikols, Dave Surratt and Erik Amblad. Knowing how these folks perform on stage I would say that we are in for quite a treat. With nine performances to bring in the masses there is no excuse to miss the show!

ART begins tonight!

2012... The Year of the Dragon & artists are celebrating...

With Chinese New Year just two weeks away Las Vegas is set to roll out the red and gold carpet for our friends from across the Pacific. Hey lets face it, China is a waking dragon ready to leave its mark anywhere it goes. Whether its buying commodities from South America, Buicks from the USA, and yes they love Buick's, or beating Las Vegas at its own game the Chinese are definitely making an impact. Here in Las Vegas the resorts go all out, decking out their properties with beautiful decorations in celebration of this important Asian holiday.

Las Vegas is well aware of the importance of making our friends around the world feel very welcome. Even local artists are jumping at the opportunity to celebrate with the Chinese. One of Las Vegas most important figurative artists, Suzanne Forestieri, will be featured at Dragon - the exhibition that opens on Thursday, January 12 at the Historic 5th Street School. The exhibition celebrates the Year of the Dragon in style at one of Las Vegas' most historic buildings.

The opening reception will be Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

The Kaiser Report... Musical happenings for the week of January 9...

Gary Haleamau at the
Goldwell Museum Luau
When Gary Haleamau sings you are filled with the true spirit of the Hawaiian islands. He is electrifying and when you add the rest of his family to the chorus you are definitely in for an amazing treat. I had the pleasure of working with Gary at the Liberace Museum many many rhinestones ago, back when he was known as the Rhinestone Paniolo. Gary and his band will be performing this Saturday, so make sure to get down to the Winchester for a memorable concert. Aloha!
