September First Friday is here...

Well I hate to say it but First Friday is upon us and I will not be here to celebrate it with everyone. I am off to the Big Apple for my yearly pilgrimage of family, friends, museums, Broadway, gastronomic delights and all the other wonderful things that make up that amazing and exciting city. In either case I will be here in spirit...

Here are many of the details for First Friday thanks to our friend City Funkhouser.

Foxs paintings dizzy the eye with a kaleidoscope of harmonious color, formed of an acrylic/gel medium that he carefully pours from the top of the canvas. Intense layers of paint overlap and push off the canvas, nearing the brink of the third dimension. Foxs kinetic paintings transcend their medium and the relationship between color, texture and form.

Camp 107 features Harold & Maude TONITE...

By far one of the most twisted and intriguing movies of the past 40 years, Harold and Maude joins the repertoire of movies that have been exhibited at the Arts Factory this summer. For me this movie represents the best of comedic film making from the 1970's and one that will keep you laughing at the twisted antics of Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort. Of course there has to be something said about turning a 1971 Jaguar XKE into a hearse! This movie is a must see. So make sure to make it down to the Arts Factory, drink a few cocktails and have lots of fun...

You and Camp 107 – it was meant to be.
Camp 107 {Cocktails, Cuisine & Classic Cinema Experience}

This Friday, August 27th, Camp 107 continues its unique urban social experience with the 1971 classic comedy, Harold and Maude. A death-obsessed 20-yr-old man/child befriends a 79-yr-old woman who has a zest for life. They were meant to be, but exactly what they were meant to be is not quite clear.

Listen to music on our patio as you enjoy dinner or our Friday drink special “$6 for a beer and a shot” – any beer with choice of a shot of Jameson, Jack Daniels or Hornitos. Movie starts at 9pm with a trivia contest intermission and drink specials. Cocktails, cuisine and cult classic cinema – just like Harold and Maude – it was meant to be.

8:00PM Cocktail Hour
9:00PM Experience Begins
11:00PM “We’re flexible, drinks anyone?”
TICKETS FREE!

Join us at Bar+Bistro @ the arts factory this Saturday, (August 28th) and every Saturday 6-10p.m. for PAINTERS ON THE PATIO hosted by AlexHuerta. Saturdays offer a plethora of choices at Bar+Bistro: interact with the artists, enjoy dinner, listen to live music, or sip our cool Sangria Saturday cocktail special – a pitcher of red or white sangria for only $10. You won’t find this anywhere else but at Bar+Bistro.

Dead Neon: Tales of Near-Future Las Vegas...

I pride myself in not owning a television, I have not had one in 5 years and I have never looked back. So how do I get my news you ask? KNPR and online of course. But one thing I have is a fabulous book collection and it grows everyday and soon it will grow again with Jarrett Keene's and Todd James Pierce latest creation. This came to me today so I will allow it to speak for itself...

Las Vegas has long been considered the American icon of excess. It offers every imaginable extreme of greed, pleasure, and despair, all supported by technology that enhances fantasy and allows residents and visitors alike to forget reality and their human responsibilities. The fourteen stories in Dead Neon imagine Sin City in the near future, when overindulgence has led to social, environmental, or economic collapse, and technology can no longer reverse decay or chaos. The settings range from futuristic casinos to the seared postapocalyptic desert, and the subjects vary from the struggle to survive in a repressive theocracy to the madness of living in a world where most life forms and all moral codes have vanished.

The contributors, all either Vegas-based or intimately familiar with the city, capture its unique rhythms and flavor and probe its potential for evoking the fullest expression of the human spirit in settings of magic, horror, and transcendence.

Todd James Pierce is associate professor of English and creative writing at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. He has published a novel and a story collection and is the coeditor, with Jarret Keene, of another Las Vegas story collection, Las Vegas Noir.

Jarret Keene has taught creative writing and literature courses at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He has authored several poetry collections and a rock-band biography, and has edited or coedited several books about Las Vegas. He also covers the city’s underground music scene for national and regional magazines.

Art Moderne... Las Vegas' rediscovered architectural past...

Over the last several years I have grown fond of an interesting architectural style that has seen a recent revivalism in Las Vegas. Art Moderne or simply Moderne is a close relative to Art Deco, a style of architecture that was well known in large cities such as New York, Miami and Los Angeles in the 1920's and 30's. It was not until recently that I began rediscovering Moderne architecture in Las Vegas.

Huntridge Theater
1208 East Charleston Blvd.
Las Vegas is notorious for demolition and as such I was more shocked then surprised when I kept on running into decent examples of this architectural style throughout Downtown. The finest example of Moderne Architecture in Southern Nevada is Hoover Dam, designed by Architect Gordon Kaufmann. As a matter of fact the dam itself was used as inspiration for the design of the Smith Center for the Performing Arts currently under construction at Symphony Park. Though the examples of Moderne in Downtown are not nearly as sophisticated as Hoover Dam or the Smith Center, the examples that do exist are clearly of that architectural style. Moderne architecture was used in Las Vegas as late as 1949.

The most well known of the Moderne structures in Downtown is the Huntridge Theater. Built in 1944 at the height of World War II, the vulnerable structure on Charleston Boulevard is the finest example of Streamline Moderne in Las Vegas. The theater was designed by famed Architect S. Charles Lee who was best known for creating some of the most important theaters on the West Coast. The Huntridge was listed on the National Registry of Historic places in 1993 and is the gateway to the historic Huntridge neighborhood located directly south of the theater.

Moderne Architecture is a close relative to Art Deco and the predecessor of Mid-Century Modern design in the United States. Moderne like Art Deco emphasized the decorative arts influenced by industrial design. Whereas Art Deco was rich in opulent textiles and geometric designs, Moderne emphasized simplicity and the look and functionality of aerodynamics. Moderne design uses height as a focus with lots of vertical lines that draw the eyes upward. Moderne is also known for the use of glass block windows, curved walls emphasizing the aerodynamic, aluminum and stuccoed surfaces.

As demonstrated from the collection of images below you will clearly see the design elements that make up Moderne Architecture. I took close to 200 images of buildings and their elements that make up the design; far too many to feature on this blog. I also took images of fine examples of Moderne revivalism that has sprung up throughout Downtown over the last several years.

So far I have identified at least 22 examples of Moderne or Art Deco architecture in Downtown with 10 examples of Moderne Revivalism. I have listed them below with corresponding images. There are other structures that are hybrids between Moderne and Mid-Century Modern that I have identified but I have not listed yet. I also do not have a list of dates yet to correspond with most of the buildings, so please bare with me as I am continuing my research.

It is heartwarming to know that Las Vegas still has these wonderful examples of Moderne Architecture dating back as early as 1931. But sadly most of these vulnerable buildings are in poor shape and might not last for very much longer. So go out and explore and see if you can find a few more... Happy hunting!
