The Cosmopolitan... Part One...

Everybody knows that I was born and raised in Las Vegas, actually I wear it proudly on my sleeve. As such I have a keen understanding about the city that I grew up in, while at the same time having a strong opinion about it. An opinion that I tend to keep to myself or share with those very close to me. So when it comes to new resort developments on the Strip I get as excited about them as going to a dentist. Therefore allow me to opine.

Interestingly enough over the last few months all the hype surrounding the Cosmopolitan has caught my attention, which by the way is no easy task. The Cosmopolitan is the last project of The Great Resort Era (1989-2010) that began more than 20 years ago with the opening of the Mirage. Its location on barely eight acres of land, sandwiched between the Bellagio and City Center, the fact that it was curiously built around the Jockey Club and its focus on the "Curious Class" tells me that this maybe a place worth visiting. It is also, by its very nature, a survivor like it's neighbor to the South. Honestly neither resort should be even standing considering the economic downturn, but through the thick-and-thin they both are here and are ready to serve the world.

Me with a Shepard
With all this said, this past Saturday myself and a few close friends decided to go ahead and visit the Cosmopolitan Hotel and Casino. I almost cancelled at the last minute because I was worried that I wouldn't  find parking and that the place would be a mad house; stereotypical local who does not go to the Strip because of all the hassle. But to my surprise it was quite easy to get into the resort and traffic was manageable for a Saturday night. Parking was made easy thanks to a red or green light above each space informing drivers if it's available, a first for Las Vegas. So after parking our transport-devices we meandered to the "lift" to take us up to the casino. As we turned the corner toward the elevators we were greeted by spectacular murals by Shepard Fairey, the very artist who created the iconic two-toned Obama posters emblazoned with the word HOPE. After spending a few minutes musing and taking photos with these wonderful works of art we couldn't wait to see what awaited us upstairs. Heck if the parking garage looked like this who knows, right?

As we exited the elevator we were welcomed by a casino appointed in rich colors, textures and lighting that created an aura of intimacy that was just enough to comfort the eyes. The casino floor was surprisingly sheik, with a touch of contemporary elegance that actually made it exceptionally inviting. The space is narrow yet wide enough that you do not feel claustrophobic and considering the relatively small footprint of the resort itself, the space was simply delightful.

Chandelier Bar
Meandering through the casino, not really knowing which way we were going, we came across the Pièce de résistance, the objet itself, the very heart of the Cosmopolitan, the Chandelier Bar. As someone who knows chandeliers from my time at Liberace's Rhinestone Ritz I was definitely shocked and absolutely amazed at what stood before me. The "Chandelier" rises several stories before you and is literally dripping in millions, if not tens of millions of crystals, each one sparkling brighter than the Cullinan diamond. The chandelier is actually a two story lounge and bar that gives the casino the touch of modern elegance that is done so perfectly that you are easily astounded by its beauty. Looking around at others who gazed upon it demonstrated to me that the Cosmopolitan created a winner.

After walking around the Chandelier we ascended to the second floor that is easily accessed by the escalators next to the bar. Upon arriving on the mezzanine, we were drawn to the most curious exhibition of antique Singer Sewing machines. The sewing machines basically make up the outside wall of a boutique; there is something to be said when you are greeted by several hundred sewing machines. After taking a few pics of the whimsical display we continued to the bar where we sat down to have a cocktail. Our bartender Derek served me a delightful libation called the "Sage 75", a beautifully mixed cocktail that was earthy, refreshing and a nice welcome to Las Vegas's newest hotel. I do want to mention that while we stood at the bar, Mr. John Unwin the Cosmopolitan's CEO walked through the space with a giant smile on his face. You could tell he was one happy man and deservedly so, heck we were quite happy ourselves...

Stay tuned for Part Two... The art collection and other treasures of the Cosmopolitan...

Arsonist sets fire to the Community Counseling Center of Southern Nevada...

On December 26th an arsonist set fire to the Community Counseling Center of Southern Nevada (CCCSN). Why someone would set fire to a organization that provides an invaluable service to this community is beyond comprehension. It was no less then a few months ago that that the Counselling Center celebrated its 20th anniversary with a spectacular gala and art show at the Nevada State Museums new building located at the Springs Preserve.

Despite this horrendous act the CCCSN stands proud and will rebuild but they need our help! To donate to the CCCSN please follow this link... http://www.cccofsn.org/

About the CCCSN

A Jingle Bells with a Downtown Las Vegas Twist...

Here is a great little jingle to celebrate the season. This song was was performed by the guests at Bill & Marc's Fabulous Christmas Party. Bill and Marc are the proprietors Retro Vegas, one of Las Vegas's great vintage furniture stores.

On behalf of Enculturate Las Vegas may all of you have a great and wonderful Holiday Season and even better New Year...

This song is performed to the tune of Jingle Bells... Enjoy...

Driving down Fremont, In a Car with rusted chrome,
I got it when the Jag, got repoed from my home.
Some bums came up to me, they made a pitch for cash,
I offered my used car to them, and they began to laugh

Oh, re-cess-ion, de-press-ion, no one seems to know.
Still tax breaks for the rich, but not the average Joe - O

We are f..ked, we are f..ked, says Dina T our friend,
She used to be our congress-man, our friendship will not end

Despite the public polls, Harry won the race
because Sha-ron An-gle, showed her ugly face
Now she's laying low, for that we give our thanks
Now we hope the G - O - P can loosen up those banks

Oh, Mex-i-can, Jap-an-ese, White or Black, we go
Which is which, it is clear Angle doesn't know - O!

Re-cess-ion, de-press-ion, no one seems to know
They say Zappos will save the day, but only Oscar NOSE!

Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn is a Grinch this Holiday Season...

Senator Coburn of Oklahoma released his government "Wastebook 2010" report today and has decided to attack Las Vegas' very own Neon Museum. This is a low blow from the most conservative Grinch in the United States Senate. Obviously Senator Coburn has no idea the positive economic impact that the Neon Museum is having Downtown and in Southern Nevada. Furthermore, it is quite obvious that he has no clue what the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act (SNPLMA) that helped fund the Neon Boneyard Park.

SNPLMA monies are raised by the sale of public lands in Southern Nevada that have to be reinvested in Nevada and used for items listed below:
  • Parks, Trails, and Natural Areas
  • Capital Improvements
  • Conservation Initiatives
  • Multi-Species Habitat Conservation Plans (MSHCP)
  • Environmentally Sensitive Land Acquisitions
  • Lake Tahoe Restoration Act Projects
If Senator Coburn is trying to win brownie points with his base he should not use Las Vegas as his punching bag. The Senator from Oklahoma should do all Nevadans a huge favor and mind his own business.

Here are a few items listed on his website, the link is below for further information.

“As 2010 ends, millions of Americans are still struggling to find work. Even those lucky enough to have jobs have had to tighten their belts. Yet, Congress continues to find new and extravagant ways to waste tax dollars. In today’s economy, we can’t afford to spend nearly $2 million to showcase neon signs no longer in use at Las Vegas Casinos, nor can Congress and federal agencies afford to spend nearly $1 billion a year on unnecessary printing costs,” Dr. Coburn said.

"The city of Las Vegas has received a $5.2 million federal grant to build the Neon Boneyard Park and Museum, including $1.8 million in 2010. For over the last decade, Museum supporters have gathered and displayed over 150 old Las Vegas neon signs, such as the Golden Nugget and Silver Slipper casinos."

Cultural Corridor shines during a December to Remember... TODAY!

Have you heard and seen what is happening in the Cultural Cooridor in Downtown, you know the area just North of the I-95 along Las Vegas Boulevard? Over the last several years the City of Las Vegas in conjunction with the Cultural Corridor, a Coalition of museums and cultural institutions, have come together to improve the neighborhood, with landscaping, sidewalks, a new park at the Neon Museum and three restored historic signs. These wonderful improvements are meant to beautify and  welcome visitors to one of the cities most historic areas.

On December 18 the Cultural Corridor Coalition in conjunction with the City of Las Vegas is hosting a December to Remember. So if you have not seen the positive changes in the area and always had a curiosity  about places like the Neon Museum, Disvovery Children's Museum, the The Old Mormon Fort and the Las Vegas Natural History Museum get Downtown this Saturday.

Location - Las Vegas Boulevard North, between Bonanza and Washington...

Downtown notes & a few thoughts...

The progress that has been happening in Downtown has been quite notable so I have decided to share some of the notes that I have taken over the last few days of my goings-on-about-town. The photos were taken with my phone so please bare with the quality. As you can see Downtown is quite vibrant and a great place to live, work and play.

Okay okay, I know I sound like the chamber of commerce but I like living down here what can I say. Speaking of the chamber, why are they not Downtown? In the 1950's the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce and its trusty publicity arm the Las Vegas News Bureau (wink) was located two blocks east of the Arts Factory, right smack in the middle of what is the Arts District today. The chamber was located on the corner of Charleston and 4th Street. Now they are located in some mall on the far south end of the Strip. Hummm...

First Friday... December 2010...

I was out and about last night for Preview Thursday and I do have to say First Friday is going to be rocking tonight. Marty Walsh's minUMENTAL Show at Trifecta was amazing and what Brett Wesley pulled together at his gallery will blow your mind. In addition, Blackbird Studios show inspired by the Goonies will definitely bring back memories of one of the best movies from the 1980's.

I could go on with the sights and sounds of Downtown but you just have to get down here and see for yourself. Now that Downtown is the "talk-of-the-town" come down and experience yourself what all the fuss is about!

Here is the First Friday lineup from Cindy with lots of great information and plenty of links to what is happening throughout Downtown.

Marty Walsh shakes up the local art scene with her new Trifecta Gallery... Grand Opening Celebration TONIGHT...

It is without any doubt that Marty Walsh is one of the most successful gallerists and artists in Las Vegas history. She has persevered through the worst of the economic downturn, has curated a fabulous collection of shows, brought to Las Vegas some of the most talented artists and is one of the nicest, most professional and dedicated people I know. That is why tonight is even more special for this pillar of the local art scene.

Who would have imagined just a few years ago that the tiny gallery located at the back of the Arts Factory would become its anchor and tell the world we are here and we are not going anywhere! With Mayor Oscar B. Goodman in tow and a few members of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce to cut the ribbon, tonight will be the culmination of Marty's dream.

Marty and her assemblage of artists will be presenting minUMENTAL Invitational during the Grand Opening celebration of the new, bigger and more spectacular Trifecta Gallery. The show brings together dozens of artists who have created a collection of small works. For a collector of small works myself this show is a must and just peeking into the gallery last night has me wondering if I should stop by during lunch before the gallery is swarmed.

Tonight will be a very special night for Marty, her family, friends, artists and fans. So please make sure to come down and see what she has created in 18b - Las Vegas' arts district.

Trifecta Gallery’s Grand Opening & Annual minUMENTAL INVITATIONAL grows to MONumental proportions
Marty Walsh voted the cities ‘Best Gallerist’ moves to a new space inside the Arts Factory, our own Mayor Oscar Goodman shows his support by doing the ribbon cutting set for Dec 2nd @ 5pm

The 5th annual minUMENTAL INVITATIONAL in Trifecta Gallery will make its debut in the larger 1200 sq.ft space during its Grand Opening December 2 at 5pm. Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce officers will attend and Las Vegas’ Mayor Oscar Goodman will cut the ribbon into the exhibition at 5 pm.

This anticipated group show has added 8 more invitations to this year’s roster because of the larger space in the Arts Factory they have occupied since July 2010. The grand opening was held off on purpose until the staff, interns and director became more familiar with procedures and the larger workload that comes with growth.

“We wanted to combine the Grand Opening with a show to encompass many artists because without the artists, their fans and patrons, we would not be here celebrating today” Says gallery owner, Marty Walsh. The expansion includes being open 7 days a week, special events, delivery service and an active internship program for people wishing to learn gallery practices.

The exhibition itself will have over 200 – 64 inch squared works of art from 26 artists across North America. There will be the popular favorites, well-known artists making their Trifecta Gallery debut and some new discoveries the gallery hopes will become popular with its patrons and visitors. Invited artists are Anthony Freda (NY), Biscuit Street Preacher (NV), Brian Henry (NV), Caesar Garcia (NV), Casey Weldon (NY), Dave Barnes (Canada) , Eric Joyner (CA), Erin Stellmon (NV), Gary Taxali (Canada), Jennifer Henry (NV), Jennifer Kleven (NV), Jerry Misko (NV), JW Caldwell (NV), Kristen Peterson (NV), Kirk Stoller (NY), Laura Ball (CA), Miguel Rodriguez (NV), Martha Rich (PA), Mary Warner (NV), Philip Denker (NV), Sam Davis (CA), Suzanne Hackett Morgan (NV), Thomas Lee Bakofsky (CA), Tony Dotson (OH), Todd VonBastiaans (NV), Wendy Kveck (NV).
