Jewish Film Festival closes with "Howl"... A docudrama about Beat Poet Allen Ginsberg...

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked... - Allen Ginsberg

It was just last night that I attended the Poets and Painters event at the Arts Factory that I read 20 lines of Allen Ginsberg's seminal work Howl. Though I would say 60% of those in attendence never heard of Ginsberg it is intereting to hear many of the young poets in attendance reciting their own prose that could have been easily mistaken for his work. The urban grittiness of Ginsberg's work is heard everyday in the urban poets of today. The contemplative words of their struggles living and breathing in an urban landscape replete with all of the trials and tribulations of contemporary life. But aside of a poets life today the Jewish Film Festival closes out its 10th Anniversary tonight in celebration of what was the life of one of the greatest Beat poets of all time.

This evening the Las Vegas Jewish Film Festival closes with the  film “Howl” beginning at 7:30 PM at the Brenden Theaters at the Palms Hotel and Casino. Starring James Franco and Mary-Louise Parker, “Howl” received critical acclaim after its recent limited release. The screening at the Brenden Theaters will be the Las Vegas Premiere of this important docudrama about the legendary poet Allen Ginsberg.

The film “Howl” is being presented by J.U.M.P. and JewEL with all proceeds from this screening going to support Jewish Family Service Agency.

Tickets are $10.00 for the film only and $20.00 for reserved priority seating at the film and entry to a pre-screening private reception at 6:00 PM in the Brenden Suite at The Palms.

Visit www.jfsalv.org (click Jewish film festival icon on home page) for ticket information, venue addresses and the full film festival program schedule.

Tickets for “Howl” are also available through the Jewish Federation’s website:
http://jewishlasvegas.com/servertransfer.html?targetURL=/ft2/form.html?__id=21254

The Las Vegas Jewish Film Festival produced by the Desert Space Foundation and the Jewish Family Service Agency, is positioned to benefit and raise awareness of the Jewish Family Service Agency, a comprehensive, non-sectarian, social service agency that provides food, jobs, counseling, emergency aid, adoptions, indigent burials, Holocaust education outreach and Survivor support.

HOWL (USA 2010, 90 min.)
Date: Sunday, Jan. 30 @ 7:30 PM
Location: Brenden Theatres, Palms Hotel and Casino (Closing Night Party)
Presented by: J.U.M.P. and JewEL
Moderated by: Dayvid Figler and Bruce Isaacson
Tickets: $10.00 - $20.00 Call 732-0556

HOWL is simultaneously a portrait of a renegade artist breaking down barriers to find love and redemption, and an imaginative ride through a prophetic masterpiece that rocked a generation and was heard around the world. James Franco stars as the young Allen Ginsberg—poet, counter-culture adventurer, and chronicler of the Beat Generation. In his famously confessional, leave-nothing-out style, Ginsberg recounts the road trips, love affairs, and search for personal liberation that led to the most timeless and electrifying work of his career: the poem HOWL. Robert Oleysyck @ Vanguard TONIGHT...

My goodness every time I hear the name Robert Oleysyck it conjures up memories of my heady days partying at "The Club." Yep you know it, the one and only Club Utopia. Club Utopia was and will always be the Grand Dame of Las Vegas night spots. Clubbers with Glow-sticks in hand and enough candy bracelets and necklaces to supply every kid in the United States for a year partied at Utopia. The sounds that permeated from its hollowed halls hearkened one of the greatest moments in Las Vegas night club history. There is no club in Las Vegas today that could even match what Club Utopia created when it opened in 1996.

As I am writing this very post I am listening to Roberts seminal recording "Digital Bliss" which I believe may have been produced in 1999 or early 2000. I bought the discs at small record store that was located in the Arts Factory way back in the day; I think it may have been owned by a couple of guys named Edgar and Michael *wink*. In either case Robert will be the guest DJ joining Resident DJ Chad Stolarick tonight at Vanguard Lounge.

Come and listen to Las Vegas History...

Jewish Film Festival Presents - Lepke, staring Tony Curtis... TONIGHT...

For 10 years the Jewish Film Festival has brought Las Vegas a great series of films celebrating Jewish culture from Israel and the diaspora. This evening the JFF in conjunction with the City of Las Vegas Office of Cultural Affairs and the El Cortez Hotel and Casino will be presenting "Lepke" staring Tony Curtis. The film will be screened this evening at the Historic 5th Street School in Downtown. There will be an after screening party at the El Cortez.

About the Film...

LEPKE stars Tony Curtis as Louis “Lepke” Buchalter, the feared leader of Murder, Incorporated. A Brooklyn Jewish kid with sticky fingers and ambition who quickly graduates to labor racketeering and murder, he falls in love with nice Jewish girl, Bernice, whose parents insist they marry in a shul. When his partners Albert Anastasia and Lucky Luciano show up uninvited to the wedding party, it is clear to everyone that Lepke is not in the pickle business. Lepke provides a unique window into the Jewish immigrant experience in the trajectory of a man driven to achieve one version of the American dream.

"Vegas Spectacular" an exhibition at the World Market Center... TONIGHT ONLY...

Vegas Spectacular: From the Stage to the Strip
An exhibition by Brian Paco Alvarez,
Curator, Las Vegas News Bureau

A photographic retrospective from the Las Vegas News Bureau Archives that explores the relationship between the spectacle of the stage show and the city's exaggerated architectural vernacular of the 1960's.

This exhibition explores the relationship between the stage performances and spectacles that have defined Las Vegas as the Entertainment Capital of the World, and its unique architectural vernacular. From its earliest development as a resort destination, Las Vegas attracted visitors with famous entertainers and over-the-top stage spectacles. The resorts competed with each other by bringing in the biggest names in entertainment and would go as far as importing famous shows from Paris, France to perform in their showrooms.

Over time this one-upmanship spilled off the stage and onto the famous Las Vegas Strip. The hotels began developing signage to advertise their stage performances. The relatively modest roadside signs of the 1950s evolved into monumental signs that grew by hundreds of feet. By the time the 1960s came about the resorts were out doing one another with enormous marquees emblazoned with flashing neon and chasing lights. Eventually the resorts themselves became the spectacle and the Strip became its stage.

The exhibition will be open to the public TONIGHT ONLY (Tuesday, January 25) during the preview screening of the film Bob and Denise, a documentary about architects Robert Venturi and Denise Scott-Brown authors of the seminal book on Las Vegas - Learning from Las Vegas. In addition there will be a preview of the short documentary Saving Lieb House and an exhibition of drawings by Robert VenturiJim Venturi, son of Bob and Denise will be present during the screening.

The event will take place this evening at the World Market Center at 6:30 p.m., as part of the Las Vegas Market Design Series. The event is free and open to the public. Building C, Room 301

Internationally renowned artist Dennis Oppenheim has passed...

It has been confirmed to me by the Public Relations and External Affairs department from the Studio of Dennis Oppenheim that Mr. Oppenheim has died. Mr. Oppenheim was currently completing work on two large Paintbrushes that are located in "18b" Las Vegas's Arts District in Downtown. Though the fate of the Paintbrushes is not known the best thing we can do at this time is offer our condolences and our prayers to the Oppenheim Family and of course to the arts community around the world.

Information on services are to follow.

Huntridge Circle Park Canvas... Today...

Well the community is coming together to discuss the long closure of Huntridge Circle Park. A contentious decision that was made by city leaders to avoid problems that arose after a homeless man was killed at the park several years ago. The "canvass" will take place today at the Arts Factory in 18b (arts district). The details are below.

Huntridge Circle Park Canvas...

Saturday 22 January 2011
10 am – 1pm

Refreshments will be served
The Arts Factory Bar + Bistro Garden

107 E Charleston Blvd 89104

Co-Chairs: Nevada State Senator David Parks, County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani, Bob Bellis, Wes Myles, Debra Heiser, Kelly McFarlane-Smith, Brian “Paco” Alvarez, “Princess” Anne Mulford, Jack Levine, The Nevada Youth Coalition, Stonewall Democrats of Southern Nevada and Organizing for America.

Special Guest Speaker: Nevada State Senator Ruben Kihuen

Circle Park has been closed for over two years depriving the surrounding neighborhood of a restful place to enjoy the best of what Downtown Las Vegas has to offer. This canvass will bring together local activists, homeowners, apartment dwellers and business owners to get a clear idea of how the people most affected by the park closure would like to proceed in regards to reopening Circle Park. Options include having the park be a place for families as a children’s park or providing a place for “man’s best friend” and his humans to enjoy a day in the sun.

There is Preview Thursdays that takes place the evening before First Friday and for the past year there in Third Fridays. Ahhh La Dolce Vita...

CAMP 107 {Cocktails, Cuisine & Classic Cinema Experience}

Cult hero Paul Bartel directed this low-budget satire in which America’s passion for cars, violence, and sporting events are finally brought together. In Death Race 2000,a champion of a brutal cross-country car race of the future where pedestrians are run down for points has a change of heart while being hounded by rivals and a conspiracy seeking to stop the race.

A nosh or drink more your speed? Enjoy dinner and a cocktail before the movie at 8pm. And unlike Death Race, you won’t get points for running over pedestrians on your way home.

Saturday, January 22nd join us from 7-10pm for Painters and Poets Jam, hosted by Alex P. Huerta and Born and Raised Productions. Enjoy the backdrop of live music from INTERZONE to the swaying rythmic words of the poets. The live mike is not only for established poets, but for anyone who wants to explore the fusion of poetry, spoken word, and music. Getting Close to the Event Horizon... An exhibition by Andreana Donahue...

January 19-March 19th
Opening reception with the artist: January 21 5:50-7:30PM

Andreana Donahue's work explores ideas of the impermanence of place through sculptural hand-cut paper installations that relate to various forms found in non-desert landscapes in her exhibition “getting close to the event horizon.”

An event horizon is the surface of a black hole. At a certain point, there is no way to control the force of its gravitational pull, beyond which there is no return. Artist Andreana Donahue has been researching black holes and is interested in the impermanence of place, the unpredictability of nature, and our human experience.

The artist explores these ideas through a sculptural hand-cut paper installation that references forms not naturally found in the desert: lush grass, surging waves, and arctic glaciers. Her intricate line work calls to mind topographical maps; these "maps" hint at previous events and connect distant landscapes with the experience of here and now. The fragile nature of her materials and the abstractions in the gallery suggest our transient, cyber-society’s distanced relationship with nature and a disconnect with any real sense of place, yet the physicality of Donahue’s cut paper forms creates a space of contemplation and reconnection for the viewer. The process of making the work balances intuition with controlled cutting and shaping in response to the unpredictability and imperfections of nature and our human experience.

The work responds to the surrounding environments of both Las Vegas and the Winchester Gallery space. Las Vegas has a history of reinventing itself, its sense of place ever-shifting as it borrows from other cultures’ architecture, landmarks, and natural landscapes to create a new reality. Featuring a dynamic wave piece spanning half the length of the gallery’s curved wall that calls to mind the spectacle of the Bellagio’s fountains or the quiet drama of a Turner seascape, Donahue’s works are drawings undefined by the picture plane, and investigate actual, imagined, and the illusion of space.

Andreana Donahue is an artist/curator currently living and working in Las Vegas. She received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and studied at Temple University in Rome, Italy. Donahue owned and curated main gallery, an exhibition space that featured contemporary, emerging and mid-career artists in downtown Las Vegas from 2007-2009 and has recently returned to her studio practice. Her work has been exhibited in Chicago, Rome, and Las Vegas, including last year’s “Inscribed Messages” exhibition at the Clark County Govt. Center.

The Winchester Cultural Center Gallery
3130 S. McLeod Drive, just north of Desert Inn
Hours: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. The center and gallery are closed on Sunday and Monday.

Bennett Peji @ Brett Wesley Gallery...

Just in time for the new year, Bennett Peji will help you re-energize your business and your community. On January 21, he’ll share case studies that are entrepreneurial and culturally insightful, based on his 7 key insights to solving complex branding challenges, whether for a business or a community. Bennett’s presentation will cover the Key Elements of Strategic Brand Positioning including Mission, Vision, Competitive Advantage, Value Drivers, and Implementation Examples. He’ll also speak on civic branding: helping cities and districts be – or become – relevant and competitive in the face of rapid change. For example, he identifies an area’s “DNA” to make its identity central to the design of new or redevelopment projects, and to cultivate the building blocks for positive growth.

eurie creative is proud to host this special event with IABC Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Advertising Federation, with gracious support from our event partner, Neenah Paper and location partner, Brett Wesley Gallery.

The Kaiser Report... Musical happenings for the week of January 17...

Tango @ Ham Hall

Remembering & Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King...

Today is a special day where we set aside our differences and celebrate the wonderful salad bowl that is our great nation. In honoring and remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we look back at the civil rights struggles that gripped our nation years ago and whose reverberations are felt to this day. Though the civil rights struggles are not as pronounced today as they were back in the 1960's we are still growing as a nation when it comes to tolerance of those that are different. Let us not forget what Dr. King once said, Free at Last, Free at Last, Thank G-d Almighty we are Free at Last...

Las Vegas like communities around the nation are celebrating this special day with parades and celebrations. The Martin Luther King Day Parade will begin at 10am along 4th Street in Downtown. Arrive early so you can get the best seats in the house. There is plenty of parking around Downtown and after the parade make sure to patron many of the businesses that are open and ready to welcome the masses.
