Congratulations All Around!

This past week was an exciting time in Downtown Las Vegas and beyond, especially with the grand openings of several new artistic and cultural attractions in and around the area.

The re-opening of the Barrick Museum at UNLV was the event to hearken the fall season. The Barrick's new partnership with the Las Vegas Art Museum is an exceptionally positive development, especially in a city that has desperately lacked a high caliber art institution over the past several years. It was also nice to see much of the local arts intelligentsia out and about celebrating the new museum. Hopefully they will all step up to the plate and support it now that it has a new home.

Located next to the UNLV Lied Library, the Barrick is located in the old gymnasium building on campus. With high ceilings and wood floors the Barrick has the look and feel of a great museum. Now that the museum is under the guise of the UNLV College of Fine Arts its future is secure, which is a great sign for me considering it was the first museum I ever interned at! I want to send out a huge congratulations to Aurore Giguet, the Barrick Museum Program Director, Jerry Schefcik, Director of the Donna Beam Gallery at UNLV, Jeff Koep, the Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Patrick Duffy, President of the Las Vegas Art Museum for making this a reality.

Another grand opening to take place this week was of course the long awaited Cockroach Theater at Art Square. The independent theater is the latest addition to come into the 18b Arts District Downtown. With an exciting crew that includes none other than Will Adamson, Levi Fackrell, Erik Amblad, Melissa Webb Finley, Scott Fadale, Jessica Scheitler, Erica Griffin and Ryan Reason the decade old company will continue breaking new ground in theater and all from their new home.

The last of the great grand openings to take place was of course none other than the Goldwell Open Air Painter Printmaking Studio and Artists Workspace. After more than a year of planning the folks at Goldwell are excited to finally make their presence felt in Southern Nevada. With their new space located smack in the middle of the arts district there is little doubt that the loneliest museum in the West will be shaking up the art scene in Vegas for many years to come. A huge congratulations goes out to Suzanne Hackett-Morgan, Charles Morgan and the board of the Goldwell Open Air Museum for making this dream come true.

Also I want to send out a huge thanks to the folks at Downtown Projects and Zappos for supporting these and many more projects!

In a year dominated with the openings of the MOB Museum and the Smith Center for the Performing Arts goodness knows the future is bright for Las Vegas Cultural Arts Scene!

OH AND BEFORE I FORGET!

Artistic Lifestyles opened up the world a few weeks ago with an amazing array of local talent ready for the world stage. Not to mention that they have an amazing studio with kilns and ovens ready for artists to create amazing works of art! - 2758 S Highland Dr Suite B

HONORABLE MENTION -

And of course our latest addition for the foodies! EAT - The Breakfast and Lunch Place Downtown! Located at 707 East Carson Chef Natalie Young's EAT is a must stop when visiting the area. The Huevos Motulenos are amazing!

Cockroach Theater gets ready for World Premier TONIGHT!

There are absolutely no words to describe how excited I am for Erik Amblad (my brother from another mother) and his amazing crew at Cockroach Theatre. This latest addition to the cultural arts scene is revving up to open to the world this evening with the premier of "Nurture" by Johanna Adams. Rumor has it that winner of the 2012 Sin City New Play Contest is expected to be quite the performance and with their brand new location at Arts Square you know it's going to be a must see when visiting the 18b Arts District.

So get out of the house and get your culture on! Why? Because I said so!

About the play - Nurture is a dark comedy about two horrible single parents, who are drawn together by their equally horrible children, and their attempt to form a modern nuclear family.

Kleven Contemporary @ Emergency Arts opens new exhibition

Jennifer Kleven brings back her 2009 graduating crew from the UNLV Department of Fine Art for her latest exhibition BFABYOBBBQredo2012. I love that name! Since its opening Kleven Contemporary has been rocking the local art scene with an amazing array of artistic talent seen in few galleries in Las Vegas. The tiny gallery, which I do not believe is larger than a few hundred square feet, located in the heart of the historic Emergency Arts building is a must see destination when visiting Downtown.

So if you are out and about make sure to stop by Kleven Contemporary.

Downtown Las Vegas has a parade and fiesta! TODAY!

I doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that September has become the default cultural month of Las Vegas. With tons of cultural activities happening in the city, thanks to milder weather, everyone is jumping on the bandwagon and having a party. Goodness knows the Latino community knows how to throw a fiesta and they are doing it right now in Downtown. Check out the flier below and come party!

The Parade begins at 10am along 4th Street with a festival to follow at the Fremont Street Experience. The event is free and all ages!

Las Vegas based artist Matthew Couper for export - @ Alios on Main

“I’ve been wanting to present the paintings and scrimshaw teeth to friends and interested parties in Las Vegas because the primary motivation for the works now come from here in Las Vegas and the machinations of the Strip - this amazing humanist construct in the middle of a harsh, arid desert. These new paintings provide a conduit between my status as a ‘new arrival’ and my dissection of Las Vegas as an unique place to make art”
- Matthew Couper

So when an internationally accomplished artist like Matthew Couper chooses Las Vegas as a backdrop to create his work, does it help legitimize an art scene that few take seriously? Do we need legitimizing? The jury is still out on that one. In any case Matthew Couper now calls Las Vegas home and he uses it as a launching pad to export his brand of work world wide.

Inspired by his new community, Matt takes the essence of Las Vegas' "culture", plus the harsh realities of living in the unforgiving Mojave Desert and expresses it beautifully on canvas. Matt definitely "gets it" and with what seems like dozens of local shows under his belt he is definitely tuned into the scene. His one night show this evening at Alios on Main, will be a preview of the collection that he will be sending out to Australia, New Zealand and Spain. It will be a great opportunity to see what the rest of the world will soon experience and to understand, if ever so briefly, what goes through the mind of a damn good artist.

Preview Thursday art walk returns TONIGHT!

I have to say that if you are trying to avoid the mass of humanity on First Friday tonight is your chance to see all the amazing art that is available in Downtown. Also it would be my highest recommendation that you come tonight because the Gay Pride Parade is also happening on First Friday. This only means there will be tens of thousands of people in the area clogging the streets for two events on one crazy night.

Preview Thursday begins tonight at 6pm in the 18b Arts and Design District on Charleston... Everyone is welcome! All ages and its free!

Here is a preview of some of the wonderful art that is being featured in the neighborhood. Brian Henry rocks Trifecta Gallery, Francois Dubeau at Sin City Gallery and Ryan Reason in the common area in the Arts Factory and Giovanni Morales at Brett Wesley Gallery.
