Poets, Film makers and futurists will talk Vegas post apocalypse...

I just got an email informing of a small gathering of poets and others that will take place at Red Rock Canyon overlook this evening at 6pm. With local visionaries like Josh Ellis and Jarret Keene you know the gathering is one not to be missed.

The gatehring will take place at the Belvedere Overlook on Charleston Boulevard inside Red Rock Canyon conservation area, it is a conference on the future of Las Vegas, given by three futurists-poets-sociologists-rock stars, namely Ryan Mathews (Detroit), Josh Ellis (Detroit) and Jarret Keane (Las Vegas).

French director Florent Tillon welcomes you to attend a wild outdoors conference for his feature Documentary on this city, "Las Vegas Meditation".

Ryan Mathews, a futurist from Detroit, Josh Ellis and Jarret Keane will all discuss the future of Vegas, desert poetics, possible apocalypse and uncertain destiny, America's last frontiers, hypothetical technological redemption, urban decay and remodelling, and much much more.

Come out to the Red Rock Canyon overlook, and join the discussion.
The event will be filmed and featured in Florent Tillon's film, currently in production.
Florent Tillon is the director of Detroit Wild City (2011)

The London Biennale Satellite Project: Rainbow: 7 Colors 7 Artists

Okay okay I have been a bad boy lately and not have been blogging as much, though I have a great excuse! More on that later... Just because I have been a little lax does not mean there is nothing happening in the world. So with all that said tonight is the big inaugural performance opening of what could potentially put Las Vegas on the international art map. The London Biennale Satellite Project: Rainbow: 7 Colors 7 Artists will take place Pop-Up Art House (PUAH) one of Henderson, Nevada's most important art centers. This amazing gallery has featured an amazing array of exceptionally well curated exhibitions whose openings bring out the cultural arts intelligentsia from all over the area. Proprietor Sam McMackin is establishing herself as a force to be reckoned with when it comes to art and culture in Southern Nevada. The great thing about her is you never know what she will surprise us with next!

The big event happens TONIGHT at 7pm. the event is FREE and all are welcome!
PUAH Gallery
730 W. Sunset, Henderson, NV 89011
323-240-2888
puahgallery@me.com
www.thepopuparthouse.com

Here is the press release which is full of information about tonights big event.
Rainbow: 7 Colors 7 Artists will be a performance-based project executed by visual artists from diverse backgrounds who have chosen Las Vegas as their home. Most of the selected artists are painters by discipline and the performance on Saturday, July 21at the Pop Up Art House will be an extension of their studio practice. "Each artist will respond to the color assigned to them but each performance is not exclusive to the concept of color. The color is only a starting point to create a larger conversation that is yet to be heard and seen," says artist and event coordinator Jevijoe Vitug.

The second London Biennale in Nevada satellite event will take over most of a commercial center with some performances happening within the gallery, a "fashion show" performance in the rear alley, a kitchen and sweetshop re-created in an adjacent warehouse space and performances at our Pop Up venue, Tempo located in the USA Diner & Lounge. There will be an outside bar for your enjoyment and iced tea courtesy of Iron Kettle Teas.

"Working with this year's rainbow theme, artists of varying backgrounds and interests used a designated color as a launching pad for performance projects that include a commentary on the disposable nature of manufactured items (Eri King) and a cooking performance referencing futuristic wartime propaganda (Brent Holmes and Yasmina Chavez). Matthew Couper addresses painting's obsessive trial-and-error nature by bringing to life Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin's "Le Singe Peintre," while JK Russ and Mina Kahn use film and fashion to present a journey from the neon corridors into the desert wilderness, bringing a bird woman to life. Filling out the rest of the rainbow is Noelle Garcia's Converse/moccasin workshop, combining contemporary society with Native American tradition, and Darren Johnson's exploration of miscommunication and rhetoric with Toshie McSwain." - Kristen Peterson, Las Vegas Weekly

The London Biennale project was founded in 1998 by David Medalla, a Filipino conceptual artist based in London, who assigns the theme for each year's biennale. The event aims to challenge and transform the notion of the art world 'biennale' as a large state or corporate-sponsored event with artists selected by curators based on their geographical location, citizenship, nationality, race and ethnicity by throwing open borders and encouraging a more intimate and community-based dialogue between the artists and audiences. Over the years, the London Biennale has expanded with simultaneous satellite events taking place in Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Berlin, New York, Boston and Las Vegas.

Rainbow: 7 Colors 7 Artists is coordinated by artist Jevijoe Vitug who instigated the inaugural London Biennale event in Las Vegas in August 2010 at the Contemporary Arts Center. This year's participation in the London Biennale will extend beyond the one-night-only performance event, Rainbow: 7 Colors 7 Artists, with an exhibition of the documentation behind and of the performances at the Contemporary Arts Center in Las Vegas September 6 through 29. The artists are: Noelle Garcia (red), Eri King (orange), Jevijoe Vitug (yellow), Matthew Couper (green), J K Russ with Mina Kahn (blue), Darren Johnson (indigo) and Brent Holmes (violet).

Admission to both the performance event and the exhibition is free.

First Friday Impressions...

Though First Friday can be a huge undertaking when attempting to see it all I have decided to show off a few images that I took with my trusted I-Phone. Interestingly enough I decided to avoid the big festival area and show images of galleries that were not inundated by the masses who attend the event. You can see from the images that you can visit First Friday and still catch the sights and sound without being overwhelmed.

Las Vegas' Arts and Culture scene is alive and well every month. If you are interested in a private guided tour of First Friday please do not hesitate to contact me anytime.

Enjoy!

Firenze String Ensemble

Winchester Cultural Center is delighted to welcome back the Firenze String Ensemble, which will tour the history of string music in the lively “From Beethoven to Bluegrass” at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 14 in theWinchester Theater, 3130 S. McLeod Drive, just north of Desert Inn Road. Admission is $10 in advance, $12 the day of the show.

The six women who make up the ensemble are some of the finest string players in Nevada: Rebecca Ramsey and Gerri Thompson, violins; Hanna Suk and Tiana Harjo, violas; and Moonlight Tran and Lindsey Springer, cellos. Individually the musicians have played for such shows as “The Lion King,” “Phantom – The Las Vegas Spectacular,” “Spamalot” and “The Producers,” and worked with Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis, Jr., Air Supply, Beyonce, Andrea Bocelli, Luciano Pavarotti and countless chamber groups and orchestras, including the Las Vegas Philharmonic and the opening of The Smith Center for the Performing Arts.

The concert will cover such a wide range of musical styles that the group has added four musical guests, namely Martin Radunz, clarinet; Joel Ferguson, banjo; Aaron Ramsey, piano; and Geoff Neuman, bass.

The group will perform three works by the contemporary American violinist, Mark O’Connor: “Appalachian Waltz for Tutti Ensemble,” F.C’s “Jig for Violin and Cello,” “Chief Sitting in the Rain for Violin, Cello, Bass and Banjo” and “College Hornpipe for Violin, Cello, Bass and Banjo;” as well as Beethoven’s Quintet in C minor, op. 29. Becky Ramsey has arranged Ervin Rouse’s blazing fiddle tune, “Orange Blossom Special,” into “Orange Blossoms for Tutti Ensemble.”

First Friday July has finally arrived...

The quirky, fun, exciting, fabulous and of course monthly arts festival has come back with a vengeance on this nice and warm July. Just the other day someone was asking me how many First Friday's I have attended over the last 10 years and I simply said, "I believe I have only missed 3 or 4 that I could remember." Now if you do the calculation I have attended over 110 First Fridays since they started in October of 2002. Pretty amazing feat in a community not widely known to have arts and culture!

But being a "busybody" of the arts as I tell everyone is not an easy task. Keeping up with all the happenings about-town and even the state takes constant vigilance and a keen eye for the better things in life. Going to events like First Friday is one of the first steps in getting to know your communities arts scene. Even going to the Smith Center, a museum, a parade helps establish roots in the community you call home. So my advice is to get away from the TV, come Downtown and experience another side of Vegas that many just do not know exists. Here is list I put together of places that will be happening in Downtown.

So come down and get enculturated!

Steve Diet Goedde new works at Sin City Gallery...

Okay I admit I love high heels! Now I know what you are thinking, Paco is kinda funny like that. But honestly even though I play for the other team I love a woman who can command a pair of high heels. My mother always said, "you can judge a woman's class from the way she can strut in high heels on a marble floor." Of course my mom would say that considering she did grew up in Buenos Aires during the Evita years and I do have admit she is right. How many times have we seen the ladies walking barefoot in a casino holding their heels? Right! My advise if you cant handle heels don't wear them! But I digress...

But with all this said there is no photographer who can capture the essence of a woman in high heels better than Steve Diet Goedde. I admit I love his work and as a proud owner of one of his more titillating high heel photographs I am a we bit biased. In any case Steve returns to the naughtiest and kinkiest of all Las Vegas art galleries, Sin City Gallery for his latest exhibition of New Works. The exhibition open on Preview Thursday, That's TONIGHT!
