Three Bad Sheep arts collective presents 8 Bad A$$ Artists...

The Arts Factory, the undisputed grand daddy of the local arts scene has been the creative nerve center of Downtown Las Vegas for over 15 years. It has been home to the arts collective 5 Finger Miscount, the Contemporary Arts Center, Dust Gallery, The Game Festival the precursor to First Friday and a myriad of others shops, galleries, studios, amazing exhibitions and even a record store. So it is logical that this perennial locus of the arts has yet fostered another great group of edgy artists, that have no other claim but to create awesome works that have the snobbiest of the curatoriat trembling in their sabatos.

With this said, the latest of a long group of creatives to ascend is taking the local art scene by storm. The Three Bad Sheep art collective, the brainchild of Alexander Huerta, Eddie Canumay and Alexander Sky Carranza is adding yet another chapter to the Las Vegas art scene. Alexander Huerta proprietor of PeaceNArt Studio has been creating art for several years and has literally left his mark in the arts district by painting several murals that have helped define the neighborhood. Eddie Canumay, also known as "Cicifu", has worked collaboratively with local art giant KD Matheson and internationally recognized Chilean Artist Jorge Catoni. Alexander "Sky" Carranza is a freelance artist who is not just remembered by his awesome piercings but by the amazing works he has painted on his lovely partner Jennifer.

These three artists have come together not just to create an awesome team but they have also brought others to their novel artistic fold in which they have christened the Three Bad Sheep & 8 Bad Ass Artists. The upcoming exhibition features the art of Carlos De Las Heras, Damien Drake, Jessica Galindo, Caesar Garcia, KD Matheson, Gina Quaranto, Niki J. Sands and Crystal Solis. With names like this on their roster you know this is a show not to be missed.

The show will open on Preview Thursday, March 3, 2011 at PeaceNArt Studio at the Arts Factory from 6 to 10pm. On First Friday March 5 from 6 to 10pm.

Artist Marlene Tseng Yu returns to Las Vegas...

After two highly acclaimed exhibitions in 1999 and 2004, at the Las Vegas Art Museum, environmental art movement leader Marlene Tseng Yu will be the featured artist at the the Southern Nevada Museum of Fine Art. Founder and curator of the Rain Forest Arts Foundation in New York City Marlene will be presenting Forms Environmental an exhibit of large environmental paintings. The exhibition will feature a number of very large-scale paintings for which she is renown for.  Marlene takes nature as her inspiration, whether it’s the towering green mountains of her native Taiwan or the glacial terrain of the Colorado Rockies where she attended college.

About the artist...
Marlene Tseng Yu began working in her signature style while obtaining her Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Colorado in Boulder, and subsequently taught art in Denver University. She became enthralled with the use of acrylic water-based paint as her media of choice because it suited her technique for painting on bigger and bigger canvases. “With acrylic paint there was no limitation to the size,” stated Marlene.

With more than 60 museum solo exhibitions worldwide over the past 30 plus years, Marlene more recent work still remains remarkably true to her original style. Her depiction of forests, rock formations, avalanches, and coral reefs are highly charged images of color-filled action. Her work shows the influence of her Western training while her scale, making nature bigger than mankind, mimics the Eastern philosophy of the art of her native Taiwan. “She sees heaven in a grain of sand,” is the way renowned art critic Donald Kuspit Ph.D. described her work. http://www.marlenetsengyu.com/

About the Exhibition...
“Forms Environmental” opens at the Southern Nevada Museum of Fine Art March 6th with a “Meet the Artist” reception for museum members. The exhibit runs through May 7, 2011. Hours are Wednesday thru Saturday from Noon to 4 P.M. Admission is free to Museum members and $3 to the public.

Brett Wesley Gallery presents Connections... Art by Bob Stang...

Brett Wesley Gallery in fabulous Downtown presents a new exhibition featuring the art of Bob Stang.

This compelling series of paintings by Bob Stang utilizes natural, cultural, and personal histories to address the present. Settler's cabins, fences, stumps and other trappings of the provisional life of the American West are outward conventions used to illustrate the idea of self-reliance. These paintings explore our tenuous relationship to the earth, myth making, and the innate yearning for the freedoms we all strive for today.

Born 1967 in Oakland, California Bob Stang comes from a family history dating back to the early gold rush settlers. He moved to Santa Barbara to earn a BA in Studio Art / Painting from UC Santa Barbara then returning to Oakland to raise a family and pursue his career as an artist.

Bob views his work as an investigation of selfhood. He states, “Recurring themes surface as attempts to reconcile inherent dichotomies of being human: internal vs. external, alone vs. many, anonymity vs. recognition, nature vs. culture. These dualities manifest themselves in a vocabulary of images culled from personal everyday objects and visual conventions from culture-at-large. Within this vocabulary is the capacity for metaphor: a poetic resonance that allows the viewer to bring his or her own associations to the work.”

The opening reception will take place on Preview Thursday March 3rd at 6pm.

Sin City Gallery presents MEMES by Artist KD Matheson...

One of Las Vegas's most creative and imaginative artists KD Matheson returns to his old studio and gallery. Way before Sin City Gallery and First Friday came into existence KD had an amazing little gallery located in the exact same location at the Arts Factory. I was introduced to KD by my best friend Mike in 2001 and I remember walking into his little space and commenting that the murals on the wall made me think of what a nightclub would be like on Mars. Not just did his work blow my mind but KD himself is an amazing soul and a great friend.

KD's work is anthropomorphic, androgynous, other worldly, hearkening back to the science fiction space movies of the 1950's, a futurist flair. Though there are many artists that have ventured into the sci-fi realm of fantasy, HR Giger coming to mind, KD's work takes the concept to another level. Unlike Giger, KD's work is not scary nor dark but rather colorful and vibrant, almost perfect for the book Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy or the movie the 5th Element. In either case his work excites me every time I muse with it and I am even more excited that he is returning home for an exhibition.

On March 3rd KD Matheson will be presenting his latest adventure MEMES, a modern fairy tail at Sin City Gallery. The work will feature bold colors that swirl and blend to create mystical images of vision’s past, combined with flashes of sensual wonderment that beckons you to a world of the fantastic. MEMES transcends space and time through florescent-colored geometric shapes and muted orgasmic tones of the sublime. The exhibition is intended to make you think with the senses and feel with the mind.

About KD Matheson and Sin City Gallery...

Matheson’s commissioned work is featured on murals throughout the City of Las Vegas and is also on permanent display inside The Cosmopolitan resort. Matheson’s artwork is also found among private collections around the globe. Gallery owner, Dr. Laura Henkel states, “Most people think that Matheson’s work is unapproachable to acquire due to his notoriety; however, we have created digital prints so that anyone may way acquire Matheson’s work for less than $100.00. The exhibition will feature canvases and sculptures for those discerning collectors who want unique pieces.”

Matheson is also the featured artist for Sin City Gallery’s second mural art installation. On Monday, February 21, 2011, Matheson will incorporate Three Bad Sheep’s “Escape Into Sanity” into a new signature piece. Sin City Gallery encourages art patrons to stop by the gallery to see how Matheson develops this exciting edition to culture in Las Vegas. Sin City Gallery is designed to accelerate the pulse of art and culture with its sophisticated exhibitions by presenting daring and eclectic art from around the corner and around the world. The mural project supports that vision and is designed to compliment the gallery’s monthly exhibitions, as well as to inspire public art within its community.

MEMES exhibition opens March 3 and runs until March 26. An intimate, informal free lecture with Matheson is scheduled for Saturday, March 4, 12:00-2pm, whereby drinks and food will be served.

The Flashlight turns 30!!! Celebration TONIGHT!!!

The Flashlight as seen from
the lobby of Artemis Ham Concert Hall
The "Flashlight" designed by Claes Oldenberg and Coosje Van Bruggen installed in 1981 at UNLV, has been welcoming students, visitors, children and all types of people to the steps of the Artemis Ham Concert Hall and Judy Bailey Theater for 30 years. Hearkening back to the days when ushers used flashlights to guide theater goers to their seats, this sculpture is by far the single most important piece of public art ever installed in Las Vegas and it marks a milestone in the development of the Cultural Arts in Southern Nevada. Its scale is breathtaking and one that brings back many wonderful memories for me growing up in the neighborhood around UNLV, not to mention my time as a student at the university.

The 38 foot sculpture was commissioned in 1978 by UNLV and installed on March 11, 1981. It is made of steel and painted black with a polyurethane enamel.

This evening there will be a lecture and cocktail reception celebrating the sculpture at the Artemis Ham Concert Hall. There will be a keynote presentation by Michael Lobel
Associate Professor, Purchase College, SUNY
“Sculpture Between Art and Spectacle:
Oldenburg and Van Bruggen’s Flashlight, 30 Years Later”

The lecture will be preceded by a screening of Coosje van Bruggen’s film about the production of Flashlight, Schoolbus Yellow Adirondack Green (1981) and followed by a panel discussion with UNLV faculty.
  • David Baird, Director of Architecture UNLV
  • Mark Burns, Chair of the Art Department UNLV
  • Emily Kennerk, Assistant Professor, Sculpture UNLV
  • Kristen Swenson, Assistant Professor, Art History UNLV
There will also be a reception at the Donna Beam Gallery following the panel discussion.

Aaron Shepard kicks off "Locals Only" show @ CENTERpiece Gallery...

Aaron Shepard
(image provided by
CENTERpiece Gallery)
Boy oh boy if there is any artist in the world that can put me in heals it is Aaron Shepard. It was in 2008 that Aaron approached me to "assist" in his "Midway" exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Center. Now what I mean by assist is not necessarily help with setting up the exhibition, nor paint walls, not even help advertise the show, basically what he wanted me to "assist" with was simple; dress yours truly up in in a black top hat and tails, red sequined bow-tie, corset, garters, g-string, thigh-high fish-net stalkings and to top it off, glittered ruby platform slippers. Aaron basically wanted me and the director of the gallery to actually be part of his "Midway" exhibition! So now that I have outed myself in more ways then one, you understand that Aaron is a very special artist and a someone you need to meet.

From the Gallery...

Aaron will be be kicking off CENTERpiece Gallery's 2011 exhibition series with its signature program “Locals Only,” on February 17, 2011. The series is a biannual exhibition program that features the works of selected local artists from the Las Vegas community. The VIP opening reception with the artist will be on Thursday, February 17, 2010, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Drawing influence from the late 19th century Decadent movement, Sheppard’s work incorporates layers of material, neon, wood, concrete, and hand drawings. Through his fascination with allegorical narrative and storytelling, Sheppard addresses ideas of desire and cultural norms. Specifically, he incorporates his own body into drawn or collaged images that is meant to juxtapose sexual identity and gender. “I continue to use my body as a canvas and object,” Sheppard says. “Images drawn or collaged are referential of my physical body and mind projections.”

Sheppard intuitively assembles physical materials and literary references to blur the boundaries between feminine and masculine, erotic and sacred. Sheppard’s series of Maleboxes, 12 individual “glory hole” sculptures with unique personalities alluding to the Twelve Apostles, are displayed at waist height, meaning to engage the viewer with the more suggestive nature of the work. Shakti SME, the centerpiece of the exhibition, touches upon themes of both the divine and profane with neon tubes pouring milk, white light from the figure’s breast-like udders, calling to mind the famed Artemis fountain at the Villa D’Este in Tivoli.

Sheppard received his MFA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2002 and currently lives in Las Vegas. His work is in the collections of the Sheldon Museum of Art and Lied Center of Performing Art in Nebraska. His work can also be viewed at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and the Virginia Cable & Wireless Corp in Vienna, Virginia. Sheppard has exhibited at the Fringe Festival in Australia, and in galleries in New York, Tokyo, Beijing, London, Las Vegas and Washington DC. Most recently, Sheppard held a solo exhibition at Western Projects in Los Angeles and has been reviewed and featured in numerous publications including the Las Vegas Review Journal, Las Vegas Sun and Desert Companion magazine.

Aaron Sheppard’s opening reception will be held on Thursday, February 17, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The public is invited to view the exhibition through April 10, during normal business hours, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
