Sam Davis at Trifecta Gallery TONIGHT for Preview Thursday!

Can you imagine we are already one month into the new year?! Well love is in the air as Valentines is approaching and many of Las Vegas' great art galleries are filling up with lots of LOVE related art to celebrate the beginning of the fertility season that is just around the corner. Trifecta Gallery is no exception with a love filled exhibition by Sam Davis. I took a sneak peek at the collection a few days ago and all I could do was smile. Marty Walsh never ceases to amaze with her perfectly curated shows and this one is as perfect as they get.

So if want to avoid the masses of First Friday make sure to get over to Trifecta Gallery inside the World Famous Arts Factory in 18b - Las Vegas' awesome arts district!

AMANDA HARRIS GALLERY OF CONTEMPORARY ART PRESENTS

Spray paint & Whiskey
by Mowgli

Friday, February 1, 2013, 6-10pm
The Amanda Harris Gallery of Contemporary Art presents a one night-show, Spraypaint & Whiskey featuring Mowgli. Mowgli is the winner of a facebook contest, and will be taking over the gallery for First Friday in February. The show will feature new works by the emerging artist, food trucks and a DJ.

About Mowgli

Mowgli is a 24 year old artist who takes inspiration from pop culture, other artists, girls he’s dated and his father’s disapproval. “Realistically, I would love to call the show ‘Sh*t I Like’ because of the straightforward nature of my art,” says Mowgli. He believes art is for everyone and takes an active interest in making his art affordable. His aspirations include giving back to the community to stay true to his artistic intentions. A portion of the proceeds generated from gallery sales and any flat donations will be given to support the local chapter of the Special Olympics. The First Friday show marks his first time showing his work in a gallery setting.
For more information, please call us at 702.769.6036 or email amanda.nelle@gmail.com. We look forward to welcoming you back to the gallery soon.

Dr. Doug Peterson: A Las Vegas Legend!

You know I have been fortunate to have met a lot of really awesome people in my life. Some famous and others not so much. But each one of those individuals have brought me great joy. Whether they serenade me with amazing stories, or just simply need a shoulder to cry on, all of them have left an indelible mark in my psyche. But one person stands out above many. That person is Dr. Doug Peterson.

Dr. Peterson was one of the founding members of the Music Department at UNLV. Back when UNLV was still called Nevada Southern University and its mascot was a confederate coyote called Beauregard. I do have to say just talking to him on the phone is like having a live history book. This year he marks his 45 anniversary with the Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society Choir, who themselves celebrate their 50th season! Pretty amazing for an arts organization to have survived this long in Las Vegas. I am looking forward to seeing them perform this year and for the next 50!

Stay tuned for I have a lot more to write about Dr. Peterson and the Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society...

Coffee with Kaizer... Musical happenings for the weeks of January 14th...

Lets go to a concert! The year has gotten off to a great start with lots of shows to enhance our musical proclivities. Thanks to Laraine's weekly report I can share little concerts and events that few people in our community would even know are happening.

Also I am exited to report that Anything Goes will be at the Smith Center next month opening February 5th. With musical score by Cole Porter, the 1930's classic is expected to bring in the crowds. If there was any musical that is at the top of my list of favs its this one.

So turn off the TV, get out of the house and go see a concert or a show. For goodness sake we are the Entertainment Capital of the World after all!

Have a great and culturally filled week everyone.

Artist Mark Mellon takes on Sin City Gallery...

Every couple of months a local artist sweeps into the Arts Factory and transforms the wall outside of Sin City Gallery into an amazing mural. This month artist Mark Mellon shows of his latest anthropomorphics with just enough _________ (Noun - female anatomy) to make it very appropriate for one of Las Vegas' most sinful galleries. This mural and gallery is a must see when in Downtown. Enjoy!

Las Vegas Arts & Culture turns 10!!! 2003 - 2013

I just want to wish everyone a happy and prosperous New Years! 2013 marks the 10th Anniversary of the Las Vegas Arts and Culture blog. Started by Robert Kimberly in 2003 and handed off to me in 2005 it has been a labor of love from the beginning. I want to thank everyone who has contributed to its success over the years. Of course Robert Kimberly who created this creative mess! My trusted contributors - Laraine Kaizer-Viazovtsev, Onnoleigh Sweetman, Evelyn Thompson and so many more. Brian Swanson my trusted friend and designer. RaShelle Roberts my amazing Creative Coach who since 2009 has given me the vision to move onward and upward with my career and life!

Huge thanks to all the artists, gallerists, musicians, creatives of all kinds and museums that make Las Vegas Livable. To Jorge Lara at VIMMAG  David Hardy and Molly O'Donnell at Arts Vegas for reporting beautifully about the arts!!! And of course all the weeklies and local publications that are telling the world that Las Vegas is not a cultural wasteland! A special thanks to Patrick Gaffey who is the Godfather of the Arts in Southern Nevada. If you don't know him shame on you. This guy was carrying the torch way before many of us were born!

Also a special thanks to so many others who have made the arts in Southern Nevada FABULOUS!!!
