Blinking Man Returns! The Blinking Bike Posse... TONIGHT!!!

Its amazing what 20 years of progress can do in a city like Las Vegas. I say 20 years because it was that long ago that cycling was my only mode of transportation. I loved riding my mountain bike all over the place. Not to mention the fact I was in spectacular shape! As time has passed bicycles are now seen more throughout the city, and not just in Red Rock Canyon. Cycling is a great way to get in shape and an excellent way to reduce our carbon footprint!

As cycling is being embraced, especially in a community where "Car-is-King", there are great events cropping up in support of this mode of transportation. On April 21st the "Blinking Man" returns to Downtown Las Vegas. This amazing Bike/ Bar Crawl will meander throughout Downtown to several of the neighborhoods most memorable watering holes. Obviously this is a 21 and over event but nonetheless a fun ride.

So if you want to hang out with an amazing crop of eccentric cyclists who deck-out their bikes in lights and all different kinds of accoutrements this is the party for you!

Ill be there and I expect you to be there too! Be safe and drink responsibly.

Blinking Man
April 21st @ 7pm
Event begins at the Huntridge Tavern
1116 East Charleston Boulevard

Pride in the Saddle Starts in Nevada: The Story of Gay Rodeo at the Clark County Library

Whether its the boom and bust cycle of mining, mobsters or any other mayhem, you have to admit Nevada is home to a lot of amazing and unique history. In addition to this history our state also has a very rich cowboy history. Just attend the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko to see that history at its best. But what is not widely known a lot about is Nevada's gay rodeo history.

The Las Vegas-Clark County Library has teamed up with the Nevada Gay Rodeo Association to present the talk Pride in the Saddle Starts in Nevada: The Story of Gay Rodeo, part of the libraries acclaimed Out West series.

Here is some further information about the event -

Join Las Vegas rodeo producer, past NGRA president and current IGRA Archives committee chair Brian Rogers on a journey down the trail of gay rodeo in Nevada and beyond. His talk will be accompanied by an exhibition of original rodeo posters, programs and rule books from early Nevada Gay Rodeo. Rogers is joined by www.GayRodeoHistory.org website founder Frank Harrell who will demonstrate the depth and breadth of historical information, images and artifacts available online. A slide show of vintage gay rodeo photographs by champion bull rider Blake Little will also be shown.

“As the proud home of National Finals Rodeo, many Las Vegas rodeo fans may be surprised to learn that gay rodeo has been in existence for over thirty-five years, and got its start in Reno,” said Gregory Hinton, producer of the Out West series. “The International Gay Rodeo Association currently claims 28 member associations in the United States and Canada, with 5,000 members and fifty thousand annual attendees. Thank you, Nevada!”

The Out West at the Library series is generously sponsored by Las Vegas–Clark County Library District, HBO, the David Bohnett Foundation, Gill Foundation, Las Vegas–Clark County Library District Foundation, and the Gay & Lesbian Rodeo Heritage Foundation (www.glrhf.org).

The Jewel Box Theater
Clark County Library

Saturday, May 19th from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.

Vegas StrEATS is Back! TONIGHT!

You know its going to be a fun night when Vegas StrEats returns into the cities belly to fill those bellies! The monthly festival, with its usual fine food truck fare, art and music to entice the masses is always a fun time. Though the weather is not perfect today things are expected to clear up this afternoon so I highly doubt there  will be rain to the keep people away. After a few fun hours out at the festival you can always go and hang out on Fremont East and enjoy more libations and maybe even a game of Pacman or Tetris at Insert Coins!

Vegas StrEats is located at the Jackie Gaughan Plaza located right next to the El Cortez Hotel and Casino.

Have a safe and sane weekend!

Blackbird Studios and local photographer Mike Korn join forces to help local animal charities...

Photographer Mike Korn
With so many pets abandoned by their owners due to the economic downturn it is no surprise that people are coming together to assist our furry friends find new and caring homes. Local photographer and friend Mike Korn has taken the cause full force and has teamed up with the crew at Blackbird Studios for this amazing cause. I invited Mike to guest blog about his latest project.

Further Our Furry Friends
By Mike Korn

Over the past few years as I began to immerse myself in the local arts scene, I became particularly attracted to the group exhibitions hosted by Blackbird Studios. In addition to its warm family-like atmosphere and terrific shows, Blackbird seemed to be one of the only galleries always looking to help the otherwise less fortunate by way of art. One such event was Japan'd Aid, held in April 2011 to raise money for earthquake/tsunami victims. So, with my never-ending desire to improve animal welfare coupled with my passion for the arts and everything local, I approached Blackbird's Owner and Art Director Gina Quaranto with an idea – a group art show benefiting local rescues. And to those who know her, Gina is also one to help the animals. So without hesitation, she was immediately on board, as was friend, fellow animal lover and artist Charles Christians.

Together the three of us brainstormed the details, first selecting the organizations we wanted to support. Foreclosed Upon Pets, Inc. (whose name says it all) was immediately chosen because as we all know; foreclosure is an issue specifically affecting our area. And because of the great work done by the folks at The Animal Foundation, we wanted to invite them as well. Choosing the organizations from so many was by far the most difficult part; but we knew it needed to be done, and quickly - there was a lot of work ahead of us.

Over the past few months, Charles, Gina, and I have been spending much of our time recruiting local artists, sponsors, vendors and entertainment in hopes of making the event as successful as possible. And I gotta add that although the development process has been somewhat overwhelming, it’s really been a great ride so far – I’ve met so many people – artists, businesses owners, and such whom either I’ve approached or who have contacted me asking to participate. The response has been outstanding. We’ve even received support from some names of local notoriety.

So, with everything coming together better than expected, I’m happy to announce that on Saturday May 19th, 2012 Blackbird Studios will be hosting “Further Our Furry Friends” – a group art show and benefit supporting Foreclosed Upon Pets, Inc. and The Animal Foundation. The event is scheduled to begin at 6PM and admission is free – complete with a ton of art, awesome raffle prizes, live music and special guests. This is a terrific opportunity to support local animal rescues, local art, and local businesses all at one. We're hoping for a great turnout, and with the events initial feedback and depending on its success, there’s talk of “Further Our Furry Friends” possibly going annual. So please, come out for what promises to be a wonderful night!

The Kaiser Report... Musical happenings for the week of April 9...

After an amazing First Friday that saw lots crowds, the fun and excitement of the cultural arts in Southern Nevada are not letting up. Its really amazing to see the huge potential the arts has in a community not necessarily known for it. But things are changing as more and more people are taking notice, especially visitors that come to our Radiant City for vacation and fun. Las Vegas is more than ready to be a Cultural Tourism destination and the arts are ready for the challenge!

Thanks to talented and creative people like Laraine Kaiser, who keep us abreast of musical happenings, the city is morphing into a place that in the next few years few will recognize. Creative people are jelling together for a common good to create a more livable and sustainable community. Are you ready for the change? I know I am...

QUANTUM VISITS
Painter and sculptor KD Matheson and mixed media artist Alexander Sky will present a dream realm; how one can be in one place and in a second somewhere completely different, jumping from space through the transcendental and multidimensional. Composed of celestial like characters, colors and stimulations, and the occasional shock value, the title of the show and the works therein sit on a mind stretching quasi thought plane of intrigue, supernatural intangibles and multicultural ideologies.

Sin City Gallery Mural Project
HONKY TONK ROBOTS
Peter Mengert presents an ingenious mural that represents our robotic nature and its transcendence. On an instinctual level, we are like robots, pre-programmed and reactive to stimuli. Sin City Gallery Mural Project features an array of mural and graffiti artists. Each artist volunteers their time and materials to create temporary works of art on the gallery's exterior wall for your viewing pleasure.
