About Sergei Shapoval

Sergei Shapoval, 30, discovered his lifelong passion for dancing at the age of nine in his hometown of Zaporizhzhya, Zaporiz’Ka Oblast’, Ukraine. At the age of 14, Sergei represented his country at the 1993 International Festival of Culture in France, where Ukraine earned first place. This achievement led to appearances on Ukrainian regional and national television and additional competitions as an amateur dancer in International Latin and Standard in Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, Poland and Russia.

In 1998, Sergei moved to Kiev to continue his dance education in an intense university program at International Slovjanic University. In his three and a half years in the program, he broadened and deepened his dance knowledge with training in ballet, jazz, modern and choreography while continuing his focus on ballroom dancing.

Sergei was invited to the United States in 2001 to teach at the Royal Ballroom Dance Studio in New York City. Soon after, he joined the staff of the prestigious Fred Astaire Dance Studios in New York. Simultaneously, Sergei attended Brooklyn College and was a founding member of the Olympic Hopefuls Dance Program at the college.
In April 2005, Sergei partnered with fellow ballroom dancer Liza Smith. After just three weeks together, they won the Fred Astaire Rising Star American Smooth title in Las Vegas. The partnership continued as they became winners and finalists of Rising Stars and Open Professional Championships at the Ohio Star Ball, Emerald Ball, Yankee Classic, Manhattan Dance Sport, Nevada Star Ball, American Star Ball, Embassy Ball, San Diego Dance Sport and Holiday Dance Classic competitions. The pair has successfully competed at a professional level for the past three years in the American Smooth Championship.

Sergei and a team of dance professionals relocated from New York to Las Vegas in 2005 and opened the Super Shag Vegas Dance Complex in Henderson in 2006. From there, Sergei went on to teach at VZ Ballroom Academy. Most recently, Sergei developed his own brand, Dr. Dance LV, and taught at Ritual at Sunset Dance Studio.

In August 2010, Sergei realized his ultimate dream when he opened his own studio in Las Vegas near Summerlin, “Sergei’s Dance Studio.” Sergei continues to instruct students on both International and American styles of dance at the competitive and social levels. Sergei is also in demand as a coach and choreographer for professional and pro-amateur students competing throughout the U.S and Canada.
