Alios
The recent economic meltdown has been difficult for Las Vegas, especially for the design community. Architectural and interior design firms have either shut down their offices or have had to lay off the majority of their staff. Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, a group of talented, young emerging designers are transforming and breaking from tradition. Leaner, greener, and meaner from living in the fast age of cookie cutter box buildings, this new force is taking center stage in a exhibit titled “2010 RFP,” which happens next month on First Friday at Alios, 1217 S. Main St.

“RFP” is an acronym for “Request for Proposal,” a word commonly seen during the past boom days by developers and city planners. Taking on a new meaning in today’s bust age, “2010 RFP” is the first exhibit to feature the works of local architects and interior designers in the Arts District. A common thread in this new generation of designers is their passion to express their creativity in multidisciplinary forms merging art, architecture, furniture, and industrial design to give meaning to a new vocabulary of ideas. All eight designers exhibiting in “2010 RFP” have branched out on their own and created their own identity.

The Place Gallery
Sculpture exhibit featuring two Las Vegas artists, Kenny Karchmer and Scott Sandoval. The opening reception will be held March 4 and 5, 2010 from 6pm until 9pm with both artists in attendance. "Pick Up Sticks" incorporates rare rose wood from Africa and Central America intertwined with contrasting glass, stone or tiles. Each work is carefully tied using fly-fishing techniques and explores the relationships between lines and curves intersecting with the objects used in these three dimensional wall sculptures.

Scott Sandoval's abstract metal sculptures are inspired by his environment and especially his love of all things aquatic. These brilliantly colored, perfectly executed monuments in steel show his absolute mastery over his medium and an eye for detail and flawless design. The exhibit runs through March 31, 2010. The gallery hours are Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 12:00pm to 7:00pm and Monday through Thursday by appointment.
Please call 702-782-0319 to schedule an appointment or for further information. This exhibition is co-sponsored by Debbe Sussman, Art Creates.

The Art of Leonardo Aguirre
TRIFECTA Gallery
Introducing Leonardo Aguirre di Matteo 'En Escena', Educated in Montevideo Uruguay as an architect Leo changed his tune to painting. Architectural references are made and one would think the artist also studied theatrics. The well drawn paintings take on a surreal stage presence but with an extremely compressed depth of field. The fun begins when you start following lines that lead to trap doors, wrap around pinball bumpers and dangle heavy objects from what appears to be simply a line- not a cable, and sometimes a dotted line. You begin to doubt your sense of weight, space and even time by the clever choice of totally unrelated objects drawn into his scenes.
