12 awesome years coming to a close and 1 exhibit that captures it all...
Rarely do I talk about the exhibitions I curate for the Las Vegas News Bureau, but there are a few times where I am willing to speak about some of the shows that I have put together, especially if they capture a moment in history that re-defines a community.
Several months ago I approached my colleague Jeanne Voltura, Gallery Coordinator for the City of Las Vegas Office of Cultural Affairs with an idea to curate an exhibition based on the last 12 years of the Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman's years in office. Jeanne liked the idea and we worked together to co-curate a collection of images from the News Bureau that would show the other side of the good Mayor. Out of the thousands of photos that the News Bureau has of the Mayor we whittled it down to 30 memorable shots. Not an easy task when you have such a photogenic Mayor like Oscar.
The images would capture the essence of a Mayor who came to symbolize Las Vegas for more than a decade. The exhibition shows the Mayor with his showgirls, tossing the first baseball at Cashman Field, dressed as Santa Claus for the Great Santa Race, and of course his signature martini glass. Though the Mayor does an important job for our city goodness knows he loves the job he was elected to do. As he always say he is the "Happiest Mayor in the Universe!"
So if you have a few moments to spare go and take a look at a few memorable images of Classic Goodman...
The exhibition is located on the 3rd floor Bridge Gallery of City Hall and runs through June 30th.
